#PostPolio patients like me are rarely given any #sedation during most multiple dental works. Also, many people who work in #surgical areas in hospitals & day #surgery clinics are rarely trained on high-risk #anesthesia protocols for #PPS patients. In fact, I've been the one who has had to provide extra educational materials to medical staff who have worked with me - multiple times in my life.
Please help me spread more #awareness of PPS patients needs w/anesthesias.
@onpubcom Orchestrated OR is a fascinating and very compelling theory of consiousness. Penrose and Hameroff have pretty much made me abandon any belief in the notion of Strong AI and to really appreciate the limits of mathematical formalism. You should check out Penrose's "The Emperors New Mind" and "Shadows Of The Mind". They shook up my entire worldview. ✌️
Program now out for the @ANZCA#ASM24BRIS !

Workshops (particularly emergency response ones) fill up quickly! #anaesthesia#anaestodon#anesthesia#painmedicine
Exciting news. Now you can enrol to be a graduate of the new Chapter of Perioperative Medicine in Australia and New Zealand.
Become a GChPeriopMed (ANZCA)!
At the @Webairs workshop at #asansc2023 learning how to frame the learnings from an adverse or near adverse event into a #BowtieDiagram.
Another way doctors and #anaesthesia are learning from aircraft safety.
Whatever you do you as an anaesthetic department, don’t buy the Draeger Perseus A500. It has a uniquely terrible knocking sound during IPPV that the company is unable to fix. #anesthesia#anaesthesia
@SmudgeTheInsultCat I worked with a guy (an anaesthetist) who took his own oral sedatives, sprayed the back of his throat with lidocaine then popped his own laryngeal mask airway in. HME filter, neck pilow and eye mask and the prep was complete! #anaesthesia#anesthesia#airTravel#IsThereaDrOnBoard
Just come across this interesting paper on the use of Supraglottic Airways (SGAs) for failed intubation in (predominently US) emergency departments.
Let me take you through it and show you why airway training needs to fundamentally change as a result.
Mega #Pfizer drug factory in North Carolina hit by an F3 tornado (7/19/23)
"The Pfizer facility has more than 1.4 million square feet of manufacturing space and sits on 250 acres. The company says it is one of the largest plants of its kind in the world. According to a Pfizer website, the plant produces #anesthesia and other drugs as well as nearly 25% of all sterile injectable #medications used in U.S. hospitals"
I often wonder if any other anaesthetists tape over drugs the patient is allergic to (or in which a drug is contraindicated) in the drug trolley to reduce the risk of accidental administration.
PSA for #RedHead folks, #gingers, or whatever else you lovely people with #RedHair call yourselves!
If you didn’t already know, a LOT of redheads need more #anesthesia than average for their size (but may also be more sensitive to opioid meds)! Here’s a couple reference links if you find yourself needing to enlighten an uninformed doctor: https://www.healthline.com/health/redheads-and-anesthesia
Really good discussion and worthwhile read on the state of consent for #anaesthesia in the UK by Matt Ainsworth and Tim Cook (and not just because they reference our editorial in the first sentence! 😂) #anesthesia#Anaestodon#anestodon
"At least five people in #Texas have been hospitalized with suspected #fungal infections in their brains and spinal cords that developed after traveling to #Mexico for cosmetic surgeries involving #epidural#anesthesia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [#CDC] warned this week."
