Effects of the design of operating rooms/theatres on safety is vastly underestimated . In this new study we looked at improving the delays for calling for help using an emergency buzzer by making it more visible using a red line from the ceiling to the buzzer.
Installing the line more than halved the number of times calling for help was delayed.

Had a letter published in BJA today about the importance of design for cognitive aids, and how future guideline documents should report them.

Ben van de Griend notes that sevoflurane has little effect on radiative forcing (IPCC measure) it takes a year for it to get to the ‘right’ level of the atmosphere but is short lived.

New study: "Only 30% of journals had easy-to-read summary articles & only 3 of these were aimed specifically at non-medical/lay readers…While there has been an increase in…plain language summaries [] over the last decade…these were mostly not published as …Journals should consider making plain language summaries mandatory to encourage authors to communicate their research findings in a way that is accessible to a broader audience."

Whatever you do you as an anaesthetic department, don’t buy the Draeger Perseus A500. It has a uniquely terrible knocking sound during IPPV that the company is unable to fix.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat I worked with a guy (an anaesthetist) who took his own oral sedatives, sprayed the back of his throat with lidocaine then popped his own laryngeal mask airway in. HME filter, neck pilow and eye mask and the prep was complete!

Just come across this interesting paper on the use of Supraglottic Airways (SGAs) for failed intubation in (predominently US) emergency departments.
Let me take you through it and show you why airway training needs to fundamentally change as a result.

I often wonder if any other anaesthetists tape over drugs the patient is allergic to (or in which a drug is contraindicated) in the drug trolley to reduce the risk of accidental administration.
