Via Kyle Griffin:

New: Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin is calling on Alito to recuse himself from all cases involving the 2020 election.

"The Court is in an ethical crisis of its own making, and Justice Alito and the rest of the Court should be doing everything in their power to regain public trust."

@virtualbri @GottaLaff great question, also is their any GOP appointed justice on the court that is not corrupt or has major conflicts of interest at this point? All of them should resign or be impeached, not that any politician in DC has the spine to actually hold them accountable though 🤷🏽‍♂️

"Conservative" judges are assholes. The latest of much evidence:
Conservative judges say they will boycott Columbia University students https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2024/05/07/student-protest-judge-clerk-boycott-columbia-university/

onpubcom,
@onpubcom@techhub.social avatar

@jeffjarvis So much for being impartial jurists. I was told that judges were supposed to set their politics aside when doing their jobs, pretty clear nowadays that I was naive to ever believe that was the case when it comes to these right wing hacks who dress up in robes. Basically they are politicians of a different stripe, same goes for the ones who currently occupy the supreme court. They've basically legalized bribery and corruption because that's what they do to enrich themselves. Also, whatever happened to the first amendment of their vaunted Constitution? Does that only apply to speech that "conservatives" agree with nowadays too?

For those losing their heads over today's actions by Judge Cannon, take a deep breath. This was always going to happen. The writing has been on the wall since Judge Cannon was drawn for the case. Getting all worked up about it is only going to make you crazy and desperate. The way we will rid ourselves of this menace is at the polls in November.

For a sober discussion on this topic this exchange today between @Teri_Kanefield and @JonChevreau is highly recommended:

@mastodonmigration @MaggyWells @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau this is an important debate that I've been engaging with people on here about too. I try not get bogged down in the semantics of words like anger vs rage. The reality is that there is clear corruption within our judicial system, that we as voters and citizens have a responsibility to reject in any peaceful way we can muster. Whether that means voting a certain way or just by venting, and yes, raging on public platforms like this against what we can all clearly see is wrong behavior by judges like Cannon and by politicians like Trump. We should continue to demand more from our public institutions because we pay their gd salaries as taxpayers, and they are currently not doing right by the people who sustain them to begin with. The corruption is so deeply entrenched at this point that most of us who are already adults will likely never see it fully unravel in our lifetimes, that's how badly democracy is currently broken imo.

onpubcom,
@onpubcom@techhub.social avatar

@mastodonmigration @MaggyWells @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau I fear not many honest people run for office anymore because of how rigged and corrupt elections are in this country nowadays, mainly because this supreme court basically keeps finding ways to legalize political bribery via the practice known as "lobbying", super PACs, pick your poison. Not to mention all the violent threats that actual good public servants have to deal with while the FBI and other gov security agencies focus on "antifa" and students protesting the war in Gaza, or otherwise just nap on the taxpayer dime. That being said I will still vote in November. Will reelecting Biden help root out all that corruption, maybe? Will voting for Trump do similar? F no.

@mastodonmigration @MaggyWells @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau it's no strawman to say the system is rigged , sorry, but let's agree to disagree . Let's check back in November

Joyce Vance: “This is a five-alarm fire. We know what the reaction would be if Joe #Biden tweeted a photo of a bound and gagged Donald #Trump in the trunk of an electric car. Why does Donald Trump get more leeway, especially with his past history? He only continues to get it because our institutions—the courts, the Republican party—let him take it.”

@GottaLaff Honestly getting to the point where I don't feel bad for the courts or anyone else powerful that he attacks. They've so badly abdicated their duties to hold him accountable that at this point I'm just going to assume they're OK with his behavior for some bizarre reason. Any of us would have been in prison long ago for this same behavior. This man is under 4 indictments and still moves freely around the country all the while the SEC allowed him to go to market with his obvious scam of a media company. In what world does someone who has 4 criminal cases and a proven history or financial fraud get to do that? Again, the powers that be seem fine with his behavior until they prove otherwise at this point. Am I wrong?

Invented Narratives and the Outrage Industry

It took me several years to understand what I was seeing.

At first, I thought the problem was Twitter algorithms. I thought that was the explanation for why what I was calling rage-inducing simplifications spread like wildfire.

1/

onpubcom,
@onpubcom@techhub.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield there have been consequences, it's just that so far they don't seem to measure up with the crimes. Attempted coups and worse, and four years later the leaders of those crimes have yet to even stand trial. And now the supreme court has inserted themselves to cause even more delay. If that was you or me we'd already be in prison long ago, never to be heard from again. That I think is what most people are upset about when they say "no consequences," because it shows that the justice system in this country treats certain people with kid gloves and others with anvils. That's what gets me mad at least, can't speak for anyone else on the topic tbqh.

onpubcom,
@onpubcom@techhub.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield would be much harder for those who profit from rage farming if we had real justice, since people would have less to rage about to begin with 🤷🏽‍♂️. I agree, it's still not helpful though. I'd prefer if more news shows just stuck to reporting the straight facts of what's happening in law and politics and did less "analysis," since that inevitably is where people's opinions and emotions seep in.

onpubcom,
@onpubcom@techhub.social avatar

@joan_friedman @Teri_Kanefield what bothers me is the glacial pace of justice when it comes to Trump and others who enjoy similar levels of privilege in our system. Like I said, if it was me or you, we would have been locked up long before we could even have run for president, nevermind be in a position to attempt a coup. Trump has been lying, cheating and stealing for decades and continues to do so. I promise you, my own rage on the topic will stop once he actually pays those civil judgements you noted, if and finally when he's no longer allowed to run out the clock with endless motions and appeals. My rage will stop once he is actually in an orange jumpsuit and he faces actual criminal trial consequences, because that's what he is. In Georgia, they put the DA who indicted him on trial before the actual people who were indicted. Do you not have rage about that or can you afford lawyers who can help you obstruct justice too?
