This showed up in my photo memories today. A different time, place, and life. My first (of many) trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It was a special trip arranged by my brother after I’d successfully completed my first graduate degree.
My biggest disappointment with this year is that I didn't get a multi-day Boundary Waters trip in. I was too busy biking, but I did miss our annual week in the BWCA. Here's a photo from a previous year.
The last film cameras that I have. That FX-3 saw lots of miles stuffed into my backpack as I backpacked in my 20s. The Nikon FM3a was the first Nikon camera that I bought. The Ricoh is my wife's old camera.
Good news for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area today! The court tossed out Twin Metals', a Chilean-owned sulfide mining company, lawsuit against the Department of the Interior. The lawsuit would have allowed the company to operate a toxic mine on the edge of the BWCA.
Background: it didn't meet their lease requirements, so Obama's DOI cancelled it. Under Trump, it bought a mansion and rented it to Trump's daughter, & it immediately got its leases back. Biden's DOI cancelled it.
I'm giving a presentation on Thursday about a canoe trip where I followed an unusual historic route. (Trailer for the presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBeyWl9vuVM)
Lunch with Friends: Following the Winchell Expedition Trip with Photographer Bryan Hansel
I often forget to add publications to my artist's resume, but I had an interesting one recently. My photos are now on the Friends of the Boundary Waters Van.
In Minnesota weed is still banned in Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
"Effective August 1, 2023, the Chippewa and Superior National Forests officials are reminding visitors that it is illegal on National Forest System lands. Possession or use of any amount of cannabis is still prohibited on all National Forest lands and at all National Forest campgrounds and facilities."
Just got back from the #boundarywaters in northern Minnesota. If you ever want to detach from the internet, enjoy the quiet, and/or see loons, this is your bet.
