ESC 2023, what to say? I felt it was a really strong year. I watched the entire show and only found one song that I felt boring or just not my style of music, everything was really hard to sort into a scoreboard. Especially the vocal performances where actually impressive, noone fell flat this year or something, at least not the ones who really wanted to give a show. My favourite vote went to Norway in the end, because it was the perfect mixture of groovy and well done. #esc2023
This edition of Eurovision was a right banger. So many earworms have been popping up in my head this week. Cha Cha Cha, Queen of Kings, My Sister's Crown, Who the Hell is Edgar, Bridges, Unicorn, Stay, Solo, and surprisingly this morning: I Wrote a Song (recency bias?). Thank you #Eurovision for a fun night. Well done on featuring so many Ukrainian acts, though they should have had more screentime, we could have done with less chat during voting and more Verka, Jamala or Go_A. #ESC2023#ESC
When I find some time this week I'll post a run-down on my website on how each of the 37 participating countries went and where to from here.
In the meantime, can I issue a plea to take a deep breath and employ some nuance when discussing the result. One of the reasons I joined Mastodon was because I was sick of the toxicity on Twitter and other social media sites, and I'm disappointed to see echoes of it here. Take it elsewhere, please.
#esc#esc2023
I'm often disappointed at how skewed the public's vote is. Say what you like about juries, but they usually spread the votes more evenly. There were some countries that really didn't deserve the very low televote they received.
It's funny that people immediately claim the contest is rigged or that the jury is way off, just because this year, the jury and the popular vote didn't agree with eachother. Is it just me remembering past contests where the results have been in the audiences favor? And where the jury favorite has lost?
I guess people aren't as gracious when their own favorite lose. Ah well, it happens - lots of times.
Und enttäuschend auch, dass ich auf Twitter quasi allein gezwitschert habe. Nächstes Jahr dann wohl doch auf Mastodon tröten?!

Once again Eurovision proved to be the best 4 hours of television and social media of the year and my first without Twitter for a very long time. Thank you my federated friends for providing chat, banter, and fun without the unpleasantness of the other place.
Also massive congratulations to Liverpool for hosting and showing the world that the UK can be inclusive, welcoming, and loving despite everything about this rancid government and our foul media.
Der wahre Gewinner heute ist eh das Fediverse. Es war lustig mit euch! Ein schöner Abend. Und die Server haben dieses Jahr viel besser mitgemacht, danke fürs Aufrüsten von bonn.social, @Sascha! :esc: #ESC#ESC2023@esc
