Instead of enabling Evil mode globally, I now have it turned on only in buffers with major modes derived from prog-mode or text-mode.

Since Evil is disabled in non-editing buffers like Magit and Dired (where it was a nuisance), I got rid of Evil collection and cut my startup time in half.

Good day, everyone!

For some reason or another, I chose to start blogging by writing about a very narrow topic: default key bindings in (and evil-mode) and which keys are the best candidates for remapping.

I'd appreciate any feedback both about the post and the website layout. I'm looking forward to learn as much as I can.

🔴 Today on Live, we'll discuss a major change I'm making to my Emacs configuration: the total removal of Evil Mode. We'll hack on my configuration a bit to figure out some ways to smooth out the transition.

Can I kick the habit, or am I forever possessed?

Hi! Allow me to make my #introduction post!

I'm Alex, and I use computers for a living. Well, for everything. I've always been interested in them. I started using #Linux as a teenager, almost 20 years ago. Today, my home is full of Linux computers, but I still keep a Windows partition around for #VideoGames.

My favorite way to solve computer problems is with #Elixir in my editor ( #DoomEmacs with #EvilMode #vim). I'm always writing #Javascript with #ReactNative these days, too.

I used to blog at https://awochna.com, but haven't in years. Maybe that'll change now that I have to put in a link to my new fediverse profile

This is so true:

"Only a tiny part of written text is printed on paper, so the What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) approach does not make much sense in the digital age. Plain text uses the What You See Is What You Mean (WYSIWYM) approach. "

And, as an aside, one the most underrated features of in is that there is a complete (almost?) implementation of under the hood, accessible via the : key binding (as in ).

And the combination of Emacs, evil mode, and is unbeatable for interacting with the . 🙃

If that is what you want, then good for you. I would be very happy if I never had to interact with any Vi-like editor in my life again. I've been using them for 35 years now and I hate them as much today as I did in 1988.

My favourite Linux shell text editor is Tilde. I wrote about it & why I like it here:
https://www.theregister.com/2021/12/17/tilde_text_editor/

Because xNix types don't get this: when I mention "weird arcane things from the 1970s" that means Emacs and Vi[m]. I detest both, and that article tries to explain why.

Spent the weekend reviewing articles and videos from @daviwil and decided I'm going to try Doom Emacs. Got the basic set up working before end of work, tomorrow I'll have a proper go. Just one thing... How do I turn off evil key bindings?
