President Biden’s son Hunter was indicted Thurs for allegedly making false statements & illegal gun possession — setting the stage for a possible #criminal#trial for the younger #Biden in 2024 while his father campaigns for re-election.
The charges follow the collapse in July of a #plea deal that lawyers for #HunterBiden had negotiated w/ U.S. Atty & special counsel #DavidWeiss, in which Biden would have pleaded guilty to 2 #misdemeanor tax violations while admitting to illegal possession of a gun but not actually pleading guilty to that #felony offense.
These multiple charges smack of govt #retaliation. The three charges are IDENTICAL; hard to see the proper exercise of #ProsecutorialDiscretion here; & this is after the prosecution really messed up the #plea first time around. And the tax charges still will be brought.
The 3 false statement charges against #HunterBiden are a raw deal. There appears to be nothing that happened since the #plea deal unraveled (through no fault of #Biden) other than #Republican ignorant potshots. And it's a freestanding charge that #DOJ basically never brings.
That does seem very sloppy on the part of the government. Do lawyers see that kind of sloppiness on a regular basis, or this a very unusual occurrence?
The conspiratorial part of my brain wants to think it's extremely rare, and could have happened here because it was written by ... someone ... who doesn't write these things every week.
