Server Blocklists have their highest value in isolating Nazi instances and pro-CSAM instances. After you've blocked the known instances in this regard there's rapidly a question of what value is being provided ?
Meanwhile, once you get out of the "instances where no one on your service follows them" you start to impact relationships between uninvolved people.

Since it seems topical between #TheBadSpace and some of the recent # fediblock discussion, some thoughts on the failure modes of blocklists, along with some thoughts on why a lot of people don't trust them.
First, a note: I think blocklists are a great bandage and sometimes what you need is a bandage, but they don't do anything more than stop the bleeding.
We need safety tools that aren't tied to blocking and that don't require shared blocklists, but that doesn't mean blocklists are bad.
Curating your experience is difficult and there are no perfect solutions in this space, so I wouldn't expect blocklists to magically become one.
They are, however a powerful tool for mitigating harms when other tooling doesn't exist.
So we need them. We also need to be thinking of the tools and capabilities that would be required to make things #safEr, we need to be cognizant of the drawbacks of our solutions, and we need to be thinking of tooling that allows us to mitigate these problems.
