Need help keeping a roof over my friend's head.

He needs a devops or cloud job, ideally in Cali, but will accept remote, or any place that won't hurt his trans family.

Granted, they already live in a place with neighbours who put up MAGA Christmas lights and signs that read "Make California Great Again: Kill a Democrat" so where is "safe", really? :(

I'm looking into some good flowering plants for my latitude and not sure what to get.

I feel I have this built in aversion to flowers; I came to see them as being useless tokens of affection or a gendered aesthetic enforcing norms, but I'm telling myself I'm doing it for the bees.

@DeltaWye yeh im trialling both tuta and proton and tuta's starting to do popups on the way to my inbox and that's not cool. only thing with proton is sometimes sites dont like that people sign up with proton accounts bc we're all criminals i guess

it might come out on top for me tho, especially since they do smtp and tuta doesnt

@DeltaWye yeah, and i hate that like I have this weird aversion to the popular stuff bc it seems like if anyone wants to leave the google mail/drive/whatever ecosystem, proton mail is probably where people land most frequently, and i just get spooked like that, like it's just secretly more of the same?

but... it's still not Google, so whatevs, eh?

Been thinking about the atom, the arc of environmentalism, and my relationship to social media.

The tl;dr is that there's no ethical extraction under capitalism for any energy tech, I don't have all the answers on ethical extraction, but it wouldn't hurt to touch grass for a bit.

The danger, as Natasha Walter sets out here, is that not only is the repression of protest bad in itself for democracy, it acts to polarise politics - whether this is a cause or effect of recent politics is an interesting issue, but the prosecution of those who peacefully protest punishes the relatively moderate.

The reframing of peaceful protester as violent extremists leaves the field or protest open to real (and really) violent extremists.

@ChrisMayLA6 if peaceful protest results in even moderates catching hell, it might be time to reconsider the role or existence of that government, either through legislation or violence—both are often needed, and it is a state-spun myth that peace alone brings change.

Nonviolence protects the State, and it's expected that states will blame violent protestors for violence even at the states' blatant instigation.

We will, sadly, see this even moreso with the climate crisis going forward.
