lol. Shelter wouldn't let us take home fosters (in a hard shell carrier) in the #CargoBike because "it's too dangerous". I even deflated the tires a bit for this, for a smoother ride.
[for background, every cat I've ever dealt with has been terrified in a car. They hate the speed, and the loud engine/vibrations. It's one of the reasons I started transporting my former cats by bike.]
Along with the police violence (look at the sheer number of bullets sprayed into that dormitory!), racism, SCOTUS nonsense, and the general lack of historical coverage (people know about Kent State, but not this) - there's a #SafeStreets/#BanCars angle here too.
50 years later, things truly have not changed much.
California: We're going to require all new vehicles to prevent you from going faster than the speed limit. And by "prevent" we mean if you're going 10 MPH over the limit, the car will beep at you. Once.
Drivers: BUT WHAT IF I HAVE TO SPEED TO GET OUT OF A BAD SITUATION? A BEEP MIGHT DISTRACT ME!
Here comes Byron's DGAF, stinking his way past two schools and over a hill to avoid some traffic signals on the way to make a U-turn and then fill a yard with fumes on the other side of the neighborhood. Shovels sticking out behind the foldaway mirror probably won't fold the same. Might need a #trafficEngineer to look at what traffic this Local Service Traffic Street is carrying. #BanCars#SafeRoutesToSchool
6yo: [on the subway] "my tummy hurts"
Me: "oh no! Are you hungry?"
6yo: "i get trainsick sometimes. But not as bad as cars. Cars are my worst enemy!"
Me: "hey, mine too!"
lol, on the way home I saw one of those climate (and life)-destroying dodge charger muscle cars with a "Team Jesus" decal on it. Now, I'm not religious at all, but I do know enough about Christianity to know that JC probably wouldn't be into that kind of thing. #BanCars#ButEspeciallyBanDangerousCars
Excellent episode from @TheWarOnCars about how auto insurance doesn't really cover all the harms from car crashes and how those costs are offloaded to others, especially the victims.
I was really surprised to learn that victims of car crashes often don't receive any compensation from drivers even when they have liability insurance because of how the law advantages health insurance companies over victims
I literally got a half a block outside my apartment - the first intersection I came to - and a driver didn't look and almost hit me. She looked for cars just didn't bother to check the crosswalk immediately in front of her before entering the intersection. I give her the hands up wtf motion and she shrugs sheepishly... And aggressively speeds around me before I finish crossing. #BanCars
#NorthCarolina's state bird is the northern red cardinal. What these striking red birds lack in brains they make up for in their talent for mimickry....which is cool until they start mimicking car alarms.
All American cities would be objectively better if they banned cars downtown.
You could still allow taxis, ambulances, and service trucks at night. There wouldn't be room for improvement. It would be safer and faster to get around. We could get rid of all these necrotic parking spaces and lots. Parking spaces are interesting from a economic POV because they destroy both supply and demand for land.
Cars are at their best when they're used to go between cities, not within cities.
Getting ready for my first Amtrak trip in five months, wake up at 4:30, everything's on schedule - 10 minutes later alert that there's a disruption. Call Amtrak and talk to a fantastic agent who is reading the notes in the system to me, powerlines down across tracks north of Chico and PG&E does not have a bucket truck available for a few hours so as of now it's a 3-4 hour delay. This is train travel in the US.
