Anthro, to poetry

A time of change
A time of endings
A time of toil
And new beginnings

What’s been finished
Now back in play
Energies expended
Investment washed away

Plans once conceived
But never fulfilled
Dreams at belay
Ambitions killed

A time for reflection
A time to adjust
Change the dynamic
It’s all or bust

One final push
In a time of decline
Rally or languish
Challenge of a lifetime

Anthro, to pnw

Two weeks since . Which really wasn’t much of a windstorm, but somehow managed to topple firs all over the Metro area.

Took a week and availability of a LARGE CRANE to clear the fir from the top of the garage(s)…took another few days to get a tarp up…now shoring the garage from the inside to prevent collapse…tomorrow.

Then we can safely remove 20 years of bikes, tools, supplies, sporting goods, hardware, building materials, antiques and camping/emergency supplies.

Let the fun begin. Tough way to get the garage cleaned.

Jerry-rigged tarp to protect roof from rainwater infiltration to garage through gaping wounds inflicted by our arboreal nemesis
That’ll leave a mark. Fir tree atop a garage.
Old tree shows rings of truth.

Anthro,

@elaterite

Worse yet, I had just put all my sensitive bonsai in the Lee of the wind at the base of this garage.

Some stripped of their limbs.

It also took out 2/3rds of the canopy of the ginormous box elder tree that shades our entire back yard…and my bonsai in the summer.

Anthro, to Bonsai

, spring is in the air…

Even though there is snow and ice in the yard, bringing a flowering quince into the house to guard against hard freeze led to a profusion of buds, shoots and flowers in a week’s time.

Now what to do with this early bird?

Straggly quince with early shoots and flowers…with ice remaining just outside the window.
Closeup of quince flowers.

I've just computed that if you want to ONE by to (about 2880 tCO2, according to @labos1point5), by not sending (without attachment), I need to completely stop sending emails for the next ...

272 YEARS !

assuming an average of 10 mails per day, each working . The of an email is considered to be 4g CO2eq.

It's much easier to @StayGrounded_net !

Have you any comparison between a 8 hour video conference versus a 500 mile air flight to attend a conference in person ?

Anthro, to pdx

Coldest Day in Portland History the weather guys bray.

I guess that follows if we only count the years since Portland was established as a city.

Thinking about the pre-Holocene days.

Anthro, to pdx

, disaster struck.

One goal of any good bonsai practitioner is to try and make their small pampered trees look like they “have been through some stuff” to signify age and experience.

So an 85’ fir tree fell across our garage and backyard, landing on the spot I had just moved the bulk of my trees to, to protect from the wicked weather we were expecting.

If the initial fall didn’t do the “fir”st damage…the cleanup will complete it. Many trees with absolutely all limbs stripped down their trunks. One of the trees I have been working on the longest lost one of its two primary trunks.

Note to self. Going to need a second green bin.

-NormalOperatingPosition

Bonsai with limbs stripped…been a tough day.
Maples hearty enough to muscle through ice and wind but no match for a big ass fir not able to maintain its normal operating position.
One bad fir day takes out trees in their “sheltered location”.

Anthro,

Taking Stalk

Was able to move a bunch of trees yesterday…as the 85’ fir continues to slice through my garage like a wood cleaver.

So many tiny trees, whose form had been meticulously crafted…snapped like matchsticks due to icy temps and brushy deluge from above.

Hopes for minor repairs to building dwindle…as the building turns to kindle.

Thoughts turn to coverage and contractors and cash…as the weather only increases the gash.

Anthro, to Sleeping

Dreams driven
By a thousand fleeting moments
Life’s confluences become
Amalgamated surrealities

Landscapes commingling
Timescales collapsed
Things barely noticed
Taking new significance

Anthro, to Sleeping

Dreams Driven

Awoke after a dream that my insulin pump malfunctioned and tried to deliver 30 units of insulin…and couldn’t be shut off.

Not an out the world dream, but an unlikely scenario for several reasons. First, there is an upper limit set for amount of insulin that can be delivered in a single bolus. Second, it’s a fairly easy process to shut off the pump. And finally, you can always just unhook the thing…which is what I had done in the dream when it couldn’t be shut down.

Still, almost every T1 diabetic knows or has heard of someone who died of insulin overload…intentionally or as a matter of excess drinking of alcohol, sickness, or other mishap. A primary reason why diabetics should not live alone if taking insulin (all T1s do) and if it is possible. Also a reason why the most dangerous time in diabetics lives is the transition to adulthood.

Frugality is the original ecological principle. Nothing shall be wasted.

The End Of Eden

Pushing ecosystems to an unstable state
Reliance upon function uncertain
As mankind tempts its fate

Protected areas remain
If we are willing to pay the cost
The future is not simply pain

Do what we must
Put functional systems first
Do not give in to all or bust

A planet to be kept
Hospitable for all
Not just the most adept

Inspired by Adam Welz’s book, The End of Eden

"Human society is completely reliant on the predictable functioning of ecosystems," Adam Welz says. "We are pushing those ecosystems into unstable states, driving up uncertainty, pushing ourselves deeper and deeper into the unknown."

Was going to say Bastendorf Beach!

Anthro,

Ok…so this is where my faltering brain kicks in…

I knew it was that lighthouse…but misplaced the names of the beaches! Bullards, not Bastendorf!

Too many great beaches.

Stayed there after proposing to my wife some 36 years ago.

Rocks have the longest memories.

They are my favorite form of long read.

Anthro, to climate

System after system falls
Like old growth trees standing
In habitats no longer suitable
Waves radiate from their landing

When they look back at us
From whatever it is that remains
Will they say they could have, should have, done more
All they did was stay in their lanes

Power and comfort for some
All that is really sought
Eking existence for the masses
Are we really so easily bought

Opportunities waning
Remedies come at a cost
The ability to overcome
Once possible, now lost

Fever Dream expressed in Jeff Wayne’s A Brave New World

Now our domination of the Earth is fading fast
And out of the confusion the chance has come at last
To build a better future from the ashes of the past

In a brave new world
Give me a handful of men
We'll start all over again

Look, man is born in freedom an' he soon becomes a slave
In cages of convention from the cradle to the grave
The weak fall by the wayside but the strong will be saved

In a brave new world
With just a handful of men
We'll start all over again

I'm not trying to tell ya what to be
Oh no, oh no, not me

But if mankind is to survive
The people left alive

They're gonna have to build this world anew
Yes and we will have to be the chosen few

Just think of all the poverty, the hatred and the lies
And imagine the destruction of all that you despise
Slowly from the ashes that phoenix will arise

In a brave new world
With just a handful of men
We'll start, we'll start all over again
I've got a plan!

Anthro, to Geology

Old friends. Many miles and rocky paths we have traveled. We have seen landscapes hundreds of millions of years in the making.

We have traveled through sun scorched rock, icy slopes, and glassy shards. I have doffed you to protect you from stream crossings, and worn you through them when I could not.

Over decades, your utility has barely faded. My capacity to test your limits has been reduced.

How many more miles have we?

Anthro,

@tantramar

Mine only a couple years newer, and I have a twin pair that are in better shape. There is a story about why I have two pair. It involves me being cheap and a good consumer advocate (for myself)…but I definitely came out way ahead on that.
