Nowością na naszej nerdowej półce jest gra Bonsai, która nie tylko oczarowała nas swoją pomysłowością, ale też przepiękną oprawą.

"Wyruszcie w niesamowitą podróż do korzeni jednej z najstarszych sztuk i osiągnijcie mistrzostwo w kafelkowej sztuce bonsai.

Każda rozgrywka postawi przed Wami nowe cele, a wasze drzewka za każdym razem będą przybierać inne kształty. "

Spring pruning my - I hope it wasn't too much or too early, but it looked healthy, so I think it can take it.

Trying to root some of the cuttings in a tray...

I wired my little... don't even know exactly what they are... cypress? yesterday.

I almost broke some branches because they are sooo soft. I hope that, with a little cut past, the'll heal again.

Used silver wire because it's easier to find when it's time to remove again. And because those are not finished bonsai anyway.

Remember that #maple #bonsai that was mostly dead, but had one branch that still looked alive (https://social.devteams.at/@dtanzer/112115866964465809)?

It is still alive! Letting it grow this year so that it can heal its wounds, design choices come next year. But to paraphrase Peter Chen:

As long as you don't kill the tree, there are options.

Today I pinched the tips from all the branches I want to keep of my , but not from the "sacrifice" branches I want to jin later. The idea is to stimulate dense growth and ramification in the branches I want to keep, and long growth and thickening in the branches I want to jin.

Will it work? I have no idea 🙈 😅 I guess I will find out! @bonsai

Bought this beech from a batch of cheap hedge plants. It was almost 2m high, but had very low branches, so I decided to chop it above the first branch.

Will it survive? Will it backbud enough so that I can make a very small out of it? Will I be able to thicken the lower trunk more? Hope so!

First bloom on my Magnolia #bonsai today. It's reliably the first thing to bloom in the garden in early spring.

Mr Cox has just started a channel for his lifelong bonsai hobby. If you’re into miniature trees, gardening or fancy a bit of slow telly, I invite you to take a look and maybe subscribe.

(Plus I helped with the filming and would equally love for you all to watch it. 😄)

Plant people, sad story time.

I just got an email from my local society notifying the death of a member. In fairness I did not know the person, but here's why it's sad:

When I attend, I am the youngest person there.

I'm 43, and the youngest person in the room.

This is true in many niche clubs. In the Dallas Society, I was the youngest. In the I'm one of a few under 60.

The median age of these groups has to be somewhere around 70. As they dwindle, we lose valuable experience. There will be no one to digitize their archives, no one to teach hands on skills, no one to pass the passion down.

I can't stress it enough, join the clubs. Access to their old magazines is worth the money and time.

Please enjoy this - a bit small perhaps for - but venerable nonetheless (I zoomed in and pasted the placard that notes its age - take a peek).

I think (please correct) from the translation that this is a Cypress maybe Hinoki (Juniper family)

, spring is in the air…

Even though there is snow and ice in the yard, bringing a flowering quince into the house to guard against hard freeze led to a profusion of buds, shoots and flowers in a week’s time.

Now what to do with this early bird?

Straggly quince with early shoots and flowers…with ice remaining just outside the window.
Closeup of quince flowers.
Overhead view of straggly quince, with abundant green buds sprouting leafs and seasonally inappropriate blooms.

Anthro, to pdx

, disaster struck.

One goal of any good bonsai practitioner is to try and make their small pampered trees look like they “have been through some stuff” to signify age and experience.

So an 85’ fir tree fell across our garage and backyard, landing on the spot I had just moved the bulk of my trees to, to protect from the wicked weather we were expecting.

If the initial fall didn’t do the “fir”st damage…the cleanup will complete it. Many trees with absolutely all limbs stripped down their trunks. One of the trees I have been working on the longest lost one of its two primary trunks.

Note to self. Going to need a second green bin.

-NormalOperatingPosition

Bonsai with limbs stripped…been a tough day.
Maples hearty enough to muscle through ice and wind but no match for a big ass fir not able to maintain its normal operating position.
One bad fir day takes out trees in their “sheltered location”.

Anthro,

Taking Stalk

Was able to move a bunch of trees yesterday…as the 85’ fir continues to slice through my garage like a wood cleaver.

So many tiny trees, whose form had been meticulously crafted…snapped like matchsticks due to icy temps and brushy deluge from above.

Hopes for minor repairs to building dwindle…as the building turns to kindle.

Thoughts turn to coverage and contractors and cash…as the weather only increases the gash.
