Two weeks ago, BunnyDad and I took Bramble and Poppy on our annual bunny camping adventure. Lots of birds, trees, big rocks and sunshine.

Happy bunny birthday to Poppy and Bramble. And a very special Sunday bunday to everyone. This is the first year some-bun walked on the cake. Luckily, it was Poppy and not Bramble. He would have made hash of the thing!

Yes, the cake was lopsided before the photo shoot. The humans will eat the cake. The bunnies will eat their birthday cards. 🤣

We purchase 50-pound boxes of Timothy hay about every two months for our insatiable rabbits. Here’s Bramble wondering what’s going on. 🐇

Each week, BunnyDad and I help with the rabbits at the Clairton, PA, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairton,_Pennsylvania animal control facility/shelter. There are 14 rabbits right now 🐾 Here’s one of the babies.

Bramble is showing off their hay rack. After many years of trial and error we found a design that works, at least for our current bunnies. The holes are big enough for bunny noses to fit in but not so big that their head might get stuck. It’s sturdy enough for some vigorous tugging and conveniently located above the litter box. 🐇

I've recently stumbled into a number of very long (many hours in two or three parts each) documentaries on the history of U.S. nuclear weapons development, command, control, security, and policy on the Sandia National Labs channel.

Sandia is one of the big three U.S. nuclear labs, the other two are Los Alamos and Livermore. (And yes, there are other large ones too.)

The documentaries I've seen so far were produced by Sandia around 2005 and 2010, with a vast number of interviews with the original persons involved in terms of engineering, military, and government.

They are remarkably frank at discussing the many drastic errors made along the way and the many problems that have occurred. You come away with the feeling that it's a miracle that there wasn't a nuclear war or unintended nuclear detonations (and they do cover the bad accidents that did occur).

Worth your time if you're interested in this area -- I learned a lot that I either didn't know or hadn't been able to put together into a coherent understanding until now.

Thanks for the SandiaLabs link!

I think Brookhaven Nat’l Lab is pretty big, too. “Originally built out of a post-World War II desire to explore the peaceful applications of atomic energy…”. https://www.bnl.gov/about/history/

And to be inclusive, there’s also Oak Ridge. I don’t know as much about their research projects. 🐇

I have the same thoughts regarding Oak Ridge. Full disclosure — I was a child of a worker at Brookhaven and Los Alamos.

I haven’t consumed anything but tea, chicken stock and 18 doses of laxatives over the past 37 hours, and for the past 20 or so I’ve just been trying to decide what I’m gonna eat after this colonoscopy. They recommend a small, easy-to-digest meal but I’m thinking brontosaurus.

Bring food with you — even something simple like PB&Js — to eat while the staff takes a looong time to decide it’s OK to discharge you.

Live someplace where hurricanes are a regular occurrence? Give Bostonians !

rarely gets hurricanes; for example, the last time was under hurricane watch was 2008.

So for those of you who live in places where hurricanes arrive more frequently, what advice do you have for us?

BunnyMama,

@gbhnews

Make sure all of your doors and windows are completely closed.

Know where your pets and small humans are at all times in case you need to grab and go.

Remember when over the air digital TV came in and unless you had a new TV you needed a converter box to watch the digital channels as analog channels went dark? Did you know it's happening again? But worse.

While the FCC just recently extended (to 2026 I believe) the required time for the existing (ATSC 1.0) system to stay operational, the new ATSC 3.0 system is loaded with encrypted DRM even on basic channels in many cases.

And get this, it appears that the external converter boxes currently available for this that can actually deal with that DRM reportedly require an Internet connection to work!

You read that right. To receive an over the air ATSC encrypted channel -- even a basic broadcast channel -- reportedly appears to currently require an Internet connection.

Now you might be asking, what the bloody hell is the point of over the air TV if you need a damned Internet connection to watch it?

And the answer is: I don't have a clue.

I'm trying to learn more. Stay tuned. No pun intended.

BunnyMama,
@BunnyMama@sfba.social avatar

@lauren

Per FCC: But for consumers to access NextGen TV signals requires new, ATSC 3.0-compatible televisions or reception devices which pose important cost and accessibility challenges. The FCC is committed to working with industry and non-profit partners to ensure any transition is smooth…

    Mathematical physicist Cécile DeWitt-Morette was born in 1922. She made foundational contributions to the study of Feynman functional integrals, organized the first American conference on general relativity (playing an indirect but important role in the eventual detection of gravitational waves), and started the Les Houches Summer School.

    A black and white photo of Cécile take in her office at UT Austin in the early or mid 2000s. A blackboard with diagrams and a well-known file cabinet sit in the background. Cécile’s hair is short and she wears a floral print shirt.
