Devotional Polytheist. Hedge Witch. Queer. Fiber Artist. Posts about Paganism and rural life in the Great Lakes region. He/Him

Header is the cover for my blog titled 'Great Lakes Pagan: Life and Craft in the Northern Forest'. The words are imposed over a landscape photo of a lakeshore with pine-covered sandstone cliffs cut out in curving patterns due to erosion.

Profile photo is me: a thin, clean-shaven brunet white guy with glasses wearing his signature grey knit hat.

I've been a #Pagan for a long time and I've been asked lots of questions over the years. There are a few different types of questioners that you run into:

The scientism atheist: It's a trap, they only want to argue with you cuz they've convinced themselves they're smart. Their questions are basic one-liners that show the only religion they know anything about is christianity.

The curious hippie: They smoked some pot or did LSD in their youth, and are aware of alternative spiritualities. Their info might be a few decades old, but they are genuinely interested.

The youth: Look, I know it's annoying having to answer the same beginner questions over and over again, but we all have to do our part. They might not accept your answer because it wasn't in that one book they read, but try anyway.

The Interfaith Christian: Surprisingly, they're patiently curious and congenial. They understand that you love your gods the way they do theirs, and they accept you. It's weird.

The seeker: Their questions are targeted and specific, because they've done a little research already. They are usually just looking for some validation, and to know they aren't alone in their practice.

The dudebro: His question is a joke, he doesn't actually want to know about curses or sex magic or anything. Ignoring or joking back is the best option.

@noam Lol, yes, and another popular one: "will you hex/put a spell on this person for me?"

A lot of people living in cities don't realize that rural USA is a lot like those third-world countries a politician might describe as ‘shitholes.’

In my tiny village(which is basically a few far-apart houses and farms gathered around a swamp):

-No municipal water (we have a well)
-No sewer (septic tanks)
-No garbage disposal (burn it)
-No public school (There's one in the next town over, bus leaves at 630am, gets back 430pm)
-No public college (there's one in the next county, that means you pay out-of-county tuition which is double)
-No mail delivery (I have a PO box)
-No police (I actually love this, no complaints here)
-No fire/emergency services (volunteers are notified by the town siren, closest actual hospital is an hour flight by chopper after you've driven 40 minutes to the rural hospital, which is basically just triage)

Where do I live? In Michigan, but you'll never find my address cuz it's not even on Google Maps.

@CatDragon Yeah that sounds pretty similar, and it's the medical stuff I worry about the most too. I moved out here from Chicago, so you can imagine what rude awakening it was, lol

@glittercleric For sure, it's suuuuuuper creepy quiet out here in the winter. But then in the summer it makes you realize just how loud nature can be and it's awesome!

@letsgoat Oof, yeah I feel bad for these kids. By the time they get home and eat dinner it's almost bedtime already! We ended up homeschooling anyway.

This tiny grape hyacinth just popped up in the middle of my yard? Probably a volunteer from the neighbors flowerbed. It's amazing what will give you!

I went on a walk this morning, and when I get home my husband says, "Make sure to take the rocks out of your pockets before they go in the laundry!"

He knows me so well, lol 😂

@napalousa Little blessings! This might just be a human thing, I like when archeologists find old remains and they've always got sticks and rocks and stuff in their pockets, lol

@MikeH I've actually done it a couple times, oops. :blobembarrassed:
One time a pine cone got in the wash and all the little flakes got absolutely everywhere, lol

Whenever I get a cold and then start to feel better, I like to do some cleansing. I've been doing what I call “air-cleansing,” I don't know if there's a better word for it. Basically, it looks like me going down to the lake and standing with my arms outstretched, like a lunatic.

As I've talked about before, I'm not great at visualization, so I use other sensations whenever possible. The feeling of the wind whipping around me, pulling my clothes, stealing my breath, makes me feel refreshed and new. It's easy, then, to let the breeze take away that grungy feeling of staleness that comes with being sick in bed for a few days. I don't know whether to consider it witchcraft, but it's something between magick and mundane.

I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies. I haven't seen a lot of movies or TV, actually. We never had a TV growing up, and my tiny FM radio was a secret, because my adoptive mother was mentally ill, and she thought the government was spying on her, or there were demons talking through it or something.

I developed a strange disdain for entertainment media. I think now, that I was just really jealous when all the other kids talked about their favorite shows and their family TV night, I convinced myself that it was all just stupid and a waste of time. ‘It'll rot your brain' and all that.

Even now, I'm woefully behind on all the latest shows with the cultural references I should know. I'm still not great at computer stuff. I mostly read books.

So I guess this is a shout-out to all the sheltered kids who don't understand any of the memes, I'm with you.

Why I faved your post :faved:

  1. “Wow, nice work, friend!”
  2. Read receipt.
  3. “I completely agree with this statement.”
  4. I understood your obscure niche reference.
  5. It’s funny and/or interesting, and I want to show it to my husband later.
  6. It is a picture of a cat.

Hail Freya, it's today's #FridayPaganPoll

Do you consider activism to be part of your Pagan practice?

#Pagan #Witch

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@Malleus That's a beautiful answer!

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@noam "Paganism is about doing" This is perfect, new slogan! Paganism's orthopraxic nature means that practice goes beyond just thoughts and prayers.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@mayorbeetles Yeah, that's a good way to put it! Magick requires some kind of action to guide the intention, so protesting is basically spellwork, lol
I like that you bring up the human connection. We Pagans talk a lot about connecting with and having compassion the Earth, and our fellow humans are a part of that.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@mayorbeetles Heck yeah, the kids are alright, I think we can do it too!

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@MsHearthWitch @aehdeschaine Yes, all of this! I like the idea of sacred space as safe space.
I think a lot about that phrase from the Havamal that says something like, ‘if you see ill, then speak out against it.’

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@aehdeschaine @MsHearthWitch Yeah, I read it every year in December as part of a devotional, and I swear I get a new profound insight every time.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@tierfreund Yeah, that's valid, I can see that. Activism might not be a practice in Paganism, just that pagans tend to care about their environment and so end up doing activism in a Pagan way.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@deadringer That makes a lot of sense; it's about reach and power. Though even small actions can be powerful to those that need them.
