I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@grimalkina ofc, that is what having to deal with the whole world feels like

@NGICommons @martelinnovate @OpenForumEurope @openfuture @cnrs @linuxfoundation @EC_NGI @EC_DIGIT @EC_OSPO I mean, I cannot disagree; it is not even wrong. It is just... I mean, I get how you get to that point, but it is so far from the reality of maintainers.

This would be great, and I am pretty sure I would support it. But also, what would it have done for xz? Can you point out the link between xz and what you offer here?

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@jankrewer I mean sure. Who will pay my employer that day, the day before, the day after, my travel and my hotel?

Also nothing you said links to what happened to xz.

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@jankrewer I will respectfully say, that if you actually want a discussion about a Digital Commons where said ressource constrained maintainers are heard, an in person workshop in a different country during their workweek may be a bit problematic?

But it seems that is not on the nose enough for you?

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@jankrewer I have done it in the past and I am doing it here.

The result is that you had nothing of substance to offer. We are used to it. More energy spent for nothing. Consider retrospecting :)

The New Developer research project from the Developer Success Lab + yours truly is now available as a preprint -- we hope this will facilitate easier downloading/sharing/and citing of the work

https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/2gej5

In this work we study how beliefs about brilliance & toxic "contest cultures" undermine software teams' capacity to confront the last few years of genAI in software e.g. by fomenting AI Skill Threat. But we also explore the protective effects of learning and belonging cultures

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@grimalkina I find this cool, but I have strong problems with the way the paper seems to embrace the fact that learning to use AI is "upskilling" and something that we need to adapt to.

I am particularly surprised to see no support for this model in the paper. I understand where you come from. And I like a lot of stuff in there. But damn does it make it hard to adapt it to my reality.

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@grimalkina I think deep down, it is the whole talk of "the transition" as if inevitable that feels like this. Our reading around my networks is that there is... Nothing to transition into and that these tools don't impact a lot.

Which makes reading this feel like I am on another planet.

Which tbf. May just be because of the sheer size of the industry.

@romeu I mean, mostly yes? I am used to it so i stopped really looking at it, too hard to go through modern tech without it. But I appreciate that I barely use the words from that lexicon, except in their precise expert domain for these specific use case.

So who knows. Maybe I am the one that is missing out.

If you're interested in understanding what's wrong with corporations right now, what's driving our global capitalist omnishambles? This is an amazingly insightful (if long, and entertainment-industry focussed) deep dive into the madness of modern management theories:

https://docseuss.medium.com/the-biggest-threat-facing-your-team-whether-youre-a-game-developer-or-a-tech-founder-or-a-ceo-is-8cd1ad359508

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross Something I feel all these pieces miss is how the demographics play into this. The need to grow enormously and the need to spend so much money on everything that there is no real impact of doing it wrong (no nega feedback loop) is intimately linked to the fact the retirement schemes money needs to get invested somewhere. And there was bluntly not enough stuff to invest in.

So we have a whole industry dedicated to finding ways to do this, and modern management is the answer to that.

@CatherineFlick Fun Fact: I know that everyone in my network of experts refuses to work for AI companies, just like they refused to work for crypto stuff before. I wonder if it would be useful for an investor to track that kind of sentiment and trend.

But I mean, my network was also betting on Rust nearly a decade ago, so...

Leatherfolk who speak non-English languages, I wanna hear about how you do Dom/sub titles ("Sir", "boy", etc), diminutives, formality, that sort of thing.

I've spoken to quite a few people who say they switch to English for this, but I feel like there are probably neat cultural/grammatical options in other languages.

Di4na,

@Xantw0 @aphyr yeah, you have a wildly different cultural context to them, usually a more intentional one.

I vividly remember the brief gold rush when the app store first launched. Indie devs were making millions of dollars just by charging a few bucks to download their app. Things have changed of course. The market is over-saturated, and the floor is always zero dollars. But IMO, it's should still be worth the price of a coffee to have a really good app that is valuable to you.
https://alcove.website/@mambocab/112288654684745718

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@polotek there is a lot to it. I pay for multiple of the software i use and i have no problem for that.

Part of the problem for devs is that we are used to being part of a system (Procurement) that made paying for software so hard that we invented a whole ecosystem to not deal with Procurement. We lost the payment aspect too, but it was a sacrifice we accepted.

So now it is how we naturally think of it.

Me trying to explain modern development practices to normies:
Me: yeah, we don’t know how long it will take, or how much it will cost, tbh we don’t really know what we’re going to make. We need to figure that out. Get a feel for the people and the problem, make some stuff that seems useful and see how it goes.
Them: What kind of hippie bullshit is this???
Me: You should’ve seen the crap we made when we thought we knew what we were doing…
Them: Who would go along with this nonsense?
Me: … the people who had to deal with what we made before…?
Them: What part of this even partially resembles Engineering???
Me: so… the thing… that we’ll figure out is the thing we should make?
Them: yeah?
Me: Well, we’ll do that… But At Scale!
Them: what on earth does that even mean??? Gimme my money back!!!
