When "the History of the USA" is written a few generations from now (assuming the world is still habitable enough for such things), the collapse of the so-called 'American Empire' is going to be attributed not to largess and overreach, but to stupidity and illiteracy personified in Donald Trump. What a headstone that will be.

I just saw a New Yorker article claiming this election is the year to "save the planet." This framing, however, seems to fail to resonate. Climate change rhetoric needs an overhaul. The planet will do just fine. We won't. That's the message.

"Donald Trump solicits $1 billion bribe" I called this accurately in a previous piece. Wannabe tyrants are inherently predictable.

@lin11c @Npars01 @DemocracyMattersALot Paxton's criminality was/is so much more nefarious than reporting generally conveyed (surprise, surprise). That any of these fools are free is an indicator that America's "institutions" are not just failing to "hold the republic together," but that they are wholly limp and entirely not up to the task of this dark moment. Here's what I wrote on Paxton 9 months ago, and it is so much worse now. https://robertvanwey.substack.com/p/when-the-top-cop-is-a-criminal

My friend Kami Rita Sherpa summitted Mt Everest for a record 29th time a couple days ago. Read about our first conversation here where he talks about what he does for a living and why. When he returns I will speak with him again about this latest accomplishment. https://robertvanwey.substack.com/p/a-conversation-with-kami-rita-sherpa

For everyone salivating over what looks like a high chance of conviction of Trump. I worked *many Falsifying Business Record cases in the NY crim justice system, many of them felonies. None of them went to jail. Not. One. You think this judge will put the 10+ time gag-order violator in jail? He hasn't yet, despite MANY people going in for that. Prison sentence on FBR charges? Not a chance.

"Long before the day of the election, Trump supporters seemed keenly aware of his tenuous chances of victory in the upcoming election...At 2:21 am on November 4, Fox News correctly called Arizona for former VP Joe Biden. This was the proverbial nail in the Trump campaign’s coffin...With the loss now essentially final, Trump associates kicked their seditious conspiracy into motion...Here is the story of the attempted soft coup to overthrow the United States of America." https://medium.com/@evidencefiles/just-say-we-won-193d373eec6b

Why is anyone shocked at the state of politics in the USA where:
-uni-lingual people think multi-lingual people who speak Eng w/an accent are dumber than they are
-there are people who believe the Earth is flat
-less than a quarter can name even half the SCOTUS judges
-less than half know how a bill becomes a law
-people believe more guns will solve gun crimes
-people who complain about crime support a candidate facing 88 criminal charges
-people think weather and climate are the same thing

@YusufToropov I just got off two flights, both dreamliners. One had no issues. The other shut down two bathrooms 1.5 hrs into a 15 hour flight. A "blowout" of another type... and no less an emergency.

Imagine the irony that humans built civilization on about a dozen millenia of stable climate, and they will destroy it in a few centuries of their own destabilization of that same climate... because of the way they built civilization.

Here's a half-formed thought I need to mull a bit on:

Somehow, algorithmic (and especially "AI-driven") decision making tends to only be proposed in contexts where it can only — or mostly — affect those with the least power in the system.

Migrants and asylum seekers.
Prisoners.
Families using any form of state support (child benefits, foodstamps, etc).
Palestinians in Gaza.

It somehow never gets proposed for use-cases where it might affect the wealthy and powerful.

One wonders why. 🤔

🧵/1

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@vfrmedia @rysiek it is also the differential of access. AI is predominantly owned by the rich and powerful. The resources needed to employ it put it out of reach for most others, and the datasets needed to leverage it against the rich or powerful are controlled (if not owned) by... the rich and powerful.

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@rysiek @vfrmedia I tend to concur, though I am torn by the idea of playing equally dirty (i.e. deploying flawed systems to make a point). Nonetheless, sometimes I wonder whether any victory can ever come from remaining 'above' the worst people (from a moral high-ground point of view).

Sometimes the ‘what’s wrong with substack’ crowd gets very defensive about people saying ‘I don’t like and won’t use substack’. I thought freedom and no moderation was the core tenet of your belief: it should extend to others’ freedom to dislike substack as well

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@skinnylatte I agree with this. The vitriol seems to arise from either side when it becomes a judgment of whether someone else uses it or not. A microcosm of our political and social environment these days, it seems.

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@skinnylatte I agree on the sentiment about fascists and their ilk, but it doesn't seem productive to attack users/non-users unless there is sufficient context to warrant it (i.e. using the platform to spread hateful propaganda or whatever).

I'm distressed by how challenging it is to continue the fight to fund projects to assist people facing extraordinary climate change issues. What galls me most is that we could fund them all with the money Jeff Bezos makes in a single hour. You can see our activities at https://www.ealsglobal.org/ and https://volunteercorpsnepal.org/
