Been on a bit of a @pluralistic binge lately on libro.fm - "The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation", "Red Team Blues" and just finished listening to "The Bezzle". All very good, really enjoyed "The Bezzle"!

Etymology is so cool.

The term "microblog" comes from micro + blog, ie small blog.

Then, "blog" is a shortened form of "Web log". And a "log" comes from "log book", which is a book used to record events on a journey.

So get this, the "log" in log book is because you would use the book to record the progress and speed of a ship by using a reel attached to a chip log... So called because it's made of wood... ie a log.

So a microblog is a small record of your journey.

I think that's very poetic that this very post is a direct descendent of mariners from 400 years ago.

@simon_brooke @yassie_j Hmmm...a couple of people mentioned this but, it seems no one has mentioned that the "log line" / cord was knotted at regular intervals (although I expect you knew ☺️). You counted the knots to measure how much was played out, hence why we measure speed across water and subsequently, air, in knots. Knot probably originally meant "to bind" and it's where we get "node" from. I'm drawing a tenuous web/computer connection here...😁

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

    @Tattooed_mummy I think as we get further away from the horrors of the great wars & the people who actually remembered them, it becomes increasingly "romanticised" as people forget what the actual point of it is. Although it also remembers the "contribution of civilian services and the uniformed services which contribute to national peace and security and acknowledges innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism" I expect a lot of people don't realise (or care)
