Am very grateful that people I follow on mastadon are good and clever but also don't mind telling me when I am wrong / biased in the most agreeable ways - so I can stop and go 'No in this instance I AM the Asshole' and so strive to do better.

Y'all rock.

Thank you.

::sigh::

The source material of Sherlock Holmes stories don't deserve whatever abomination this Guy Ritchie version is going to result in..

Also stop casting people in their mid 20's to play teenagers !

“In Young Sherlock we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before."

Yeah. Sure.

Cause a sweary, misogynistic, violent Sherlock has never been done before evah ! 😒😑

@pancaitiff Fair and valid point about teen exploitation - I suspect it's my particular dislike for this particular actor - who has played a teen since he was a teen and isn't a very good actor but comes from an acting dynasty family .. surname Fiennes.

@pancaitiff yup - I don't 100 % agree with most 'oh it's nepotism' arguments - buuuut when it's obvious WOO BOY is it obvious !

So a Screenwriter - selling a course on adapting novels into screenplays - titled his Linked-In article post

"Why is the film always better than the book?"

Aaaaaand I know it's 'I wanna sell you something clickbait'.. but no.

This is demonstrably not true.

What examples immediately spring to mind for you ?

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

For me 3 immediately spring to mind:

American Psycho,
The Godfather, and
Fight Club !

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

poking around da internets there are listicles - there are always listicles but they include:

  • Psycho(1960)
  • Jaws (1975)
  • Bladerunner (1982)
  • The Princess bride (1987)
  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
  • Jurassic Park (1993)
  • Forest Gump (1994)
  • children of Men (2006)
  • The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
  • Gone Girl
  • Any Bond Film
Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@gallowswitch I''ve only seen the movie not read the book - though I know of the book's - erm - problematic qualities - so I would say yes that counts !

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@irina have you seen / read American Psycho or Fight Club?

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW

this is a debatable one because like Bladerunner - the movie of The Running man is an adaptation of the core concept, but not an straight adaptation of the story - hope that makes sense.

The Movies are both coherent in their own rights, but neither really reflects the books they are based on :)

This happens to S. K and P Dick a LOT - see also the Shining, and Minority Report.

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW Oh I very much agree it's why people who don't understand nor respect Anime wonder why live action adaptations of anime don't work - even though there are some rare exceptions.

Animations aren't just elaborate film storyboards.!

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW

It's also why I often bounce hard off of books which are thinly written screenplays. You can tell when a writer doesn't want to write a novel they just want to get attention for a film / tv deal

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@irina

I don't recommend anyone read the book American Psycho - and the film is a specific acquired taste.

Fight Club is a VASTLY SUPERIOR film to the source material. Even even the books' author admits it.

Ah. Thanks brain.

Of course the Vampire fiction that smooshes Tudor history together with modern Supernatural Fiction appeals.

It's because you've had hyper focus on both since - forever 🙄

Duh.

[ Ya ever wanna facepalm ya own brain? ]

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@jonobie so far the books have more extensive history flashbacks and deal with the Tudor politics a lot more. :)

Me :: Silently ponders how publicly admitting I like vampire fiction will cause people to shun me when I know for a FACT that liking vampire fiction is almost normcore in it's universality ::

Being perceived is hard y'all.

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@munroe I have not seen that but shal track it down.

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@munroe would you like to start swapping reccs ? Cause our tastes might not match but I am sure we'd introduce each other to something good ! 😊

Faintdreams,
@Faintdreams@dice.camp avatar

@munroe I haven't forgotten about the vampire reccs - just whittling down a list and deciding how best to present the info.. :)
