I laser cut and painted some acrylic for the front panel of this IMSAI 8080 recreation and it makes all the difference. Still some issues with the electronics but also added a fan mostly to stop me reaching my fingers in while turning it on and electrocuting myself.

I worked at Microsoft Dublin for a while ten years ago, and while there suggested we create a video portal linking MS campuses across the world.

The news that the public art installation video portal linking Dublin with New York has had to be closed -again- due to lewd behaviour from the Irish side proves I was definitely onto something.

Happy “Kill the Bit” day to those who celebrate! Back in 1975 this was one of the first “type ins” for home computers, specifically the Altair 8800. Toggle in the code and you can play a little reaction timer game on the LEDs.

When it’s the people who say “customer journey flywheels” who get promoted, you know you’re in the wrong org.

Looking fancy. Now need an acrylic front panel to finish it. That’ll happen.

All before machine learning and in a tiny amount of memory.

@psychicparrot42 I was thinking about this when reading about Melinda Gates. You think she should be in prison?

I always remember the nice thing said by the barista in local coffee shop:

“Oh we call you ‘the customer called John that isn’t an asshole’ “

Enough progress that I earned an ice cream. It’s clocking through memory, stopping and starting.

Sure “almost mine”. Almost. I think my bid topped out at $300.

Sold for $5600. My raspberry pi based PiDP-8 cost a lot less and runs with a lot less fan noise, so I should be grateful.

In 2024 I would like the ability to paste a piece of text that happens to be bold or in another type size into my doc AND NOT HAVE EVERYTHING I TYPE AFTER IT ALSO BOLD OR IN A DIFFERENT SIZE. Thank you.

Every wondered how nerds played computer games before computers? We used pocket calculators.

As I was cleaning this keyboard (top marks if you can guess which 80’s British system it was from) I found the perfect ChatGPT key.

BASIC (60 years old today!) was the first programming language I ever used - on a ZX80.

It made perfect sense (well, some of the string handling was tricky).

Learning assembler and Forth, and then Pascal, Occam, Modula2, COBOL, and on and on (C, C++, Objective-C, Swift, Rust) and more recently - and chronologically backwards - Lisp, has been a wonderful adventure.

It’s not the fastest..

Calculating Pi using a Microsoft BASIC program running under CP/M on an Arduino based Altair 8800.

Yes I type that it does seem a bit crazy.

But it’s fun!

My office now has a -10 (because we’re a modern, forward-looking office) and under WSL I can log into it using a graphical (Knight TV) terminal emulator from Windows. We should then be able to use messaging apps and improve our productivity as we write LISP software and explore AI.
