all those "ai accelerator" chips being crammed into every fucking device under the sun (including SBCs!!!)

what do u reckon the average utilisation on those? and what % of that utilisation do u reckon is just like... adware spyware bullshit nobody actually wants?

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline Not sure they are very LLM-specific, but a bit more general (i.e. I doubt much has changed hardware-wise from a year or two ago where all vendors were talking about image recognition or speech recognition use cases). But agreed with the overall point, I also see a lot of this as vendors pushing it regardless of actual use in the end. Also a problem of "this is hype now, but average hardware dev cycles take so long we're probably 2 hypes down the road before stuff could ship"

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland @mw1cgg I'm still sleeping in a tent (at a YHA). Their outside ventilation does not quite match the generator drone, House martins singing are lovely but don't quite have the spectral range and somehow the ground is not shaking. Odd. 😅

Gevendort halt 🤷‍♂️😬

https://forgejo.org/docs/latest/user/language-detection/

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@scy @n0toose yeah, all alternatives I can think of are entirely different words, and that's also kinda risky in a translation. I.e. equivalents of "bundled", "external", "imported", and then you can start a lot of nitpicking if these are really identical enough to "vendored" to be valid translations...

kinda pissed off at FS (the networking company) who try to sidestep the whole "it's not legal to send you marketing emails without an opt out" thing by assigning everyone an account manager (read: marketing intern) from whose email marketing emails are sent.

normally it gets auto filtered into the marketing folder anyway but occasionally one gets through to my main inbox, and today's was some shite about LLMs, so I finally replied and told them to fuck off.

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland how does "a human supposedly does it" sidestep any of the regulations around it?

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland hmm... I would've thought explicitly refusing marketing use would work either way (without having to argue about automatic or not), but I guess the PECR part could be interpreted as allowing justified interest under (UK-)GDPR for non-automated contacts?

There is a well-established tradition of making and iterating upon designs of 3D printers, but...Has anybody thought "I am going to make a 2D printer"? This feels like a gap. Sometimes, I just want to compose a letter to my grandmother or do little a mail merge, as a treat. Expandability would be great; Centronics, RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces would be fantastic, with maybe an embedded PostScript.

Am I insane?

Is smaller democoding easier?

I wonder if it's like pixel art.

(yeah yeah I know "you don't have to do sizecoding" except all anyone EVER talks about is sizecoding, for the most part; and also pixel-arting an executable sounds kinda neat)

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@frost being forced to restrict your scope by size limits can be useful, but I don't think you can say smaller==easier. The focuses are different at different sizes.

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@frost in that direction: look up @lovebyteparty on YT. Compos for lots of different sizes, 16 bytes up to 1 kB, and it feels like almost every step changes something. And that' all far below the "large" 4k/8k/64k size-restricted categories.

is netflix really as big as some of those other companies? or did they just not want the acronym to be FAAG?

HeNeArXn,
@HeNeArXn@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline it was originally a stock market term, for the set of big-name "tech" companies that had stocks doing well at the time. No basis in absolute size or what the companies are doing.

    Ooof, please correct me if I'm wrong about this. If I understood it right, the authors of the paper linked below, published at NDSS (a respected academic IT security conference), sell it as an interesting research result that off-the-shelf consumer keyboards are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, and can mis-recognize keystrokes when overloaded with extreme levels of EMI.
