Shit is going down HARD in Eurovision right now.We are hours from the beginning of the fest and in the last couple of hours:

The french artist stopped his song during the dress rehearsal today, gave a speech about peace, and left the stage

The Irish ones sent a press release asking the EBU to disqualify Israel for the comments their broadcaster had done about the Irish song

Both Ireland and Greece didn't show up to the festival flag parade that kickstarts the show.

Norway's artist who were going to be the spokesperson of the jury tonight announced she is declining to participate... An hour ago, about 8 hours before she would have to go live

For sure. We have all seen the HUGE protests in Israel against the Nethanyau regime. They started way before the Hamas attacks and have been continuing despite hard crackdown. However, basically any sliver of good gets lost among all the dead babies, children and their young mothers...

It's bleak beyond comprehension.

Apple AirDrop has gotten much less reliable in the last year. It used to always work like magic. Now, it seems to fail half of the time on transfers between me and friends and between my own devices.

Also, the bump mega vibration screen ripple thing sends a contact card instead of the thing someone is trying to share often enough to never use it.

The only fix is both sides doing an airplane mode toggle. Annoying. Not magic.

Weird, I have the opposite experience. I find it is improved now between the contacts I have. A bit slow to detect the target at times, but works every time.

Mastodon will never be superior to other social media platforms if it doesn't adopt #PascalCase when suggesting hashtags. Defaulting to all lower case does nothing to help me understand the difference between #therapists and #therapists.

I have superior vision to many my age, but if using #PascalCase was the default, even I wouldn't have unnecessary misunderstandings. It must be quite challenging for people who rely on screen readers.

Using on iOS, and once you have written a hashtag in Pascal case, the client remembers to the next time you want to use it.

Not a core Mastodon feature, but very useful to me.

Something I tell my software students a lot when they’re looking for jobs is to remember that a shockingly large number of job descriptions are written by people in HR who have next to zero understanding of the industry, the specific team, or the business need.

All they’ve got to work with is fragments they’ve heard without comprehension, coming to them through a terrible game of corporate telephone.

It generally harms women. They often pass on job listings where they don’t absolutely meet all requirements.

We guys often fall back on our overconfidence, thinking “well, how hard can it be” and wondering why there are so few women in this industry.

And this at a time where we desperately need diverse voices and views on our teams.

I am at 34 years in this business and with a 100% score, projects and teams that were well mixed with genders, ages, ethnicities etc. have ALWAYS performed better AND been more fun to work for.

We scare away the people we need the most.

Two classic Apple obsessions put them in this situation.

  1. Their forever quest for “thinner” gadgets, whether or not they need it.

  2. The total secrecy around unreleased products, even within the company. This gave them no option to run the ad by a test audience which would have given them a HUGE thumbs down before they embarrassed themselves by releasing it to great fanfare.

Did they manage to squeeze a LOT into an unbelievably small device. Yes, they did.

Wifey and I walk into a doctors office. When I sat down first (she’s parking), I get only mild looks from the older folks here… I make a joke about not knowing what to do and have a seat.

When wifey arrives and sits down?! Stares. All of them. Silence.

I guess this is their first experience seeing lesbians in the wild?!

There is a lot of truth to this story, and the fact is that, no we don’t see (or at least notice) many lesbian couples.

My observation is that it’s way less common to witness simple acts of affection between two women in public. (Across Scandinavia and Northern Europe.)

Wild guess: because of bad experiences from cis people earlier on?

I have a Sonos Roam speaker (waterproof wireless triangular one). I know I can boss it around with my voice to play music. Is there a way to have it pass things (like Reminders for example) to Siri? I doubt it but I figured if anyone did know they hang out on Mastodon and might tell me.

Looks like you can at least add it to your Apple Home app, so maybe there's a way. Sonos does have a list of voice commands (didn't find an exhaustive list online), and once you've set it up, you can ask it "Hey Sonos, what can you do?"

We’re staying in the cutest little tiny home in Asheville. Wildly comfortable bed, decent size fridge, great shower, 160 Mbps internet… and for like $80/night. 5m from downtown, but in a nice forested area. Such a great find.

I just can’t accept the conventional wisdom that liquid cooling using water by default needs to contaminate that water.

Sure, use the water for cooling, but keep it in a closed and clean system so it can be recirculated or reused. This seems like a problem current engineering should be able to solve (supported by AI, naturally.)
