I'm still getting accustomed to the Fediverse. I played/watched a bunch of video games and might want to tell someone about them. My tabletop RPG days are behind me.

I really love this video.
Despite the clickbaity title, he’s extremely level headed in everything he puts forward.
And picks on one of my biggest pet peeves: the authoritative critic, who words their opinion pieces in such a way that leaves no room for different viewpoints or experiences.

I actually didn’t have the original Castlevania back in the day. A friend did, so I did play it lots.
But I did get Simon’s Quest and loved it, despite being imperfect. 😊

@OutofPrintArchive I didn't own a copy of Simon's Quest until the Castlevania & Contra Collection on PC. But, I had Nintendo Power back issues. Neither the issue featuring the game nor the Counselor's Corner 2 issues later explained what the white crystal would do. The instruction booklet was also trying for more humor than instructions, perhaps misleading in regards to the red crystal.

Yep, alternate continuity. Nathan Graves had the Hunter Whip, rather than the Vampire Killer.

So last year I watched Batman: The Animated Series, Batman '89 and Batman Returns. A friend lent me a copy of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. I thought all of those were great.

I recently watched the Harley Quinn animated series. The same friend lent me a copy of Superman For All Seasons, Dark Night: A True Batman Story, and Batman: Hush. Then I bought these through a combo of my local hobby shop and Target's buy 2 get 1 free sale.

I might have a problem. 😆

@LadyMarth01 Paul Dini also wrote some of Batman Beyond (including the two part premier), but I watched it when it was on Netflix and I could easily access the Justice League Unlimited crossover episodes (one of which was an epilogue for Terry after his series was cancelled). There were also comics, but I don't think Dini wrote any of those.

@OutofPrintArchive I'm surprised it wasn't a notable thing that you could play long Game Boy games without the limitation of battery life. As to their suggestion of two-player Game Boy games, I only recently learned Killer Instinct's handheld port was made to use two SNES controllers on SGB. I don't know if that's more or less niche than using Hori's Super Game Boy controller to play SNES Killer Instinct.

@OutofPrintArchive Wikipedia has a list which you can sort by that feature. I didn't know some games also have multitap support. If it is accurate on Donkey Kong having that, I have no idea what that would do, unless it allows for even more players trying to draw on the screen while you play.

@OutofPrintArchive "It's all 3D now, but we much preferred the GBA port's graphics..." The GBA port had a really buggy implementation of the Active Time Battle system, to the point where your characters might never get turns anymore. One character's high-level HP growth was also bugged in US (but not EU), so while I finished the game and got to the GBA bonus dungeon, I gave up on playing any more of it.

DS did change the way item drops are handled for the worse, but that's my only negative.

JTO_is_Typing,
@JTO_is_Typing@mstdn.games avatar

@OutofPrintArchive Most bugs in FF aren't disruptive. FF4's item duplication was widely published.

I think that reviewer would have considered the 2011 PSP version the best way to play. I didn't have that handheld, but I heard plenty of praise for it before the Pixel Remasters.

I really enjoyed the voice acting and script in the 3D version. It also had a music player in the extras. You could close the lid of the DS and instead of going into sleep mode it would still play the soundtrack.

Edit: On further examination, it seems the Chris Houlihan room does exist in cartridges from other regions, they just don't have his name, so it's effectively just a localization difference.

I decided to go against Magus with the same team that is depicted in the official art by Akira Toriyama.

Artwork showing the same three protagonists against Magus, but it's outside the castle.

@OutofPrintArchive I didn't play this one, but only the multiplayer mentioned for the original Crystal Chronicles required the Game Boy Advance, not single player.

A bit of an odd selection there for the "Other Formats" box. If it deserves a comparison to PSO, then its closer to Diablo than WoW. PSO was also on GameCube & PC, but Blue Burst didn't have an offline mode and the official NA and EU servers were being shut down that year. There are private servers now and the client was free.

The brand new rescan for CVG 169 - December 1995 (UK) has just been added to the preliminary magazine catalogue.
As always, this version has not gone through the full restoration process, so it will look rougher compared to the old, fully edited one.
But with this rescan, the colour values and shadow detail, as well as overall fine detail is improved quite a bit.

"Nintendo hard" is an old phrase, but I like to think the video game development equivalent of that was . Made by just 3 people, it managed to be a better Zelda 2 clone with an even harder final boss fight. US Gamer had an interview with programmer Yukio Horimoto before it was closed, here's an Internet Archive copy.

@OutofPrintArchive While the review isn't wrong about early RPG conventions, "Although in fairness we'd question exactly why you'd be interested in playing an RPG in the first place," reeks of bias against them. I don't know how you play DQ4 without any comment on Torneko Taloon.

As @bill pointed out, Nintendo of Europe didn't get many JRPGs in the prior decade. So, I'll speculate that Mathers' bias could be from lack of exposure, despite citing prior Dragon Quest.

Anyone else ever think about the mishmash of mythology going in in Altered Beast? The protagonists are Romans revived by a Greek god to save a Greek goddess who gets tied to a crucifix and turned into a dove. Along the way you shapechange by punching two-headed dogs. Not Cerberus. Neff is discount Hades who becomes a rhinoceros. And the protagonists turn into tigers to fight unicorns, because maybe they knew a guy who heard of them in India?

No, just me? OK.
