One of the big Qs from pundits before the DMA was ‘what are all these 'great' apps we're missing out on because of Apple's App Store restrictions, and do they even exist?’.

Mere days after a major App Store rules change, @delta (which has been denied for years), is the top app on the App Store.

For every Delta, there are a thousand great apps that were simply never started because they would never fly. Dreams that never left the whiteboard, market segments that were never given chance to exist

JonathanGerlach,
@JonathanGerlach@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @delta Somewhere in the multiverse of possible App Store guidelines, an iPad version of Panic’s Nova exists and is thriving.

How the hell could they cancel Lower Decks?! It was the freshest new Trek in decades. (Okay Strange New Worlds is also pretty fresh and great and they didn't cancel that YET but why can't we have both?!)

@bigzaphod You know what's still on? You’ll never believe it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Discovery_season_5

Just had the weirdest thing happen. Walk up to my Mac that I haven't used for hours and it's locked and on and doing a Time Machine backup to my clunky external drive.

I must have typed the password at least 9 times and it kept acting like I had a typo. Some attempts I typed so slow I know I didn't have one.

Out of desperation I cracked it open and typed the password on the built in keyboard and got in on the first try. 🤔

JonathanGerlach,
@JonathanGerlach@mastodon.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle I had the same experience a few days ago. I was thinking maybe my external monitor and keyboard weren’t considered trusted input devices or something, but I don’t have any evidence to support this.

I saw an Iowa license plate yesterday. Lots of people are in Vermont today. Last I heard we were going to have an extra 100k people.

jeff vogel's Spiderweb Software website, in march 2000. creator of the Exile and Avernum series, jeff previously took mail orders and telephone orders. the web site introduced the concept of ordering shareware games over the internet to his fanbase.

5 years after its disappearance from general use in HTML, it is surprising still using a server-side imagemap to handle navigation clicks on the menu 😆

@vga256 I loved this video from him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stxVBJem3Rs His shameless reuse of the wolf asset, community management advice (ban them!), and constant reprising and remaking of his existing game library. Lots of good stuff here.

I am struggling mightily to get my Mac app working. I had the basics in place, then screwed it up, then started over using NIBs, and now I can’t get my view controller working.

You’d think after 30 years of doing this kind of work it would be easy, right? Well, not for me. I’m just smart enough to get by and stupid enough to struggle and mess up a lot.

Yesterday was one of those days I wanted to throw my computer out the window and become a barista.

JonathanGerlach,

@fahrni In high school, I did a lot of farm work at a summer camp. I daydream about picking up square bales of hay and stacking them on a wagon. I also think about woodworking a lot.

I tried to burn a CD yesterday and discovered that you just can’t burn .cue / .bin files on the Mac. I don't think you ever could.

I'm reading through the Ello post mortem articles and they give me all the feelings (good and bad) about my entrepreneurial ideas. Ello is also from Vermont. I would never want to have shareholders, because I don't want my customers to ever feel like I'm going to juice them for more and more profit. I would want either a co-op or a B-corp, probably. I wish I knew more about this stuff. I would like to do it, but I want to get it right on the first try, as I probably wouldn't get another shot.

JonathanGerlach,

@joy It was heartbreaking to see Ben & Jerry's go to Unilever. I guess they had very strict requirements for the sale, which is good, but not every company does that. It's really difficult to keep money streams in Vermont. So many people I know started out scooping ice cream for relatively large $ per hour because Ben and Jerry set a fixed ration of CEO to entry level pay. I want to be like those guys.

It makes me so happy that the Nova editor supports 6502 assembly syntax highlighting. I'm using this and ninja (a fast builder) to build some NES projects. In order to level up my NES development skills, I signed up for http://pikuma.com/courses/nes-game-programming-tutorial by @pikuma and I'm really happy with it so far.

A screenshot of a ninja build file for the NES. You type “ninja” to build it.

C has such an appealing simplicity to it that it sounds really fun... until you're making your own dynamic arrays and hash maps and realize maybe you should've just learned Go 😂

JonathanGerlach,
@JonathanGerlach@mastodon.social avatar

@collin When I worked on AirParrot and Reflector, we ported Apple’s Plist and all “Plist types” from CoreFoundation and got them working with basic C code on Windows, Linux, and Android. It was super fun.

The top of the pay range for Netflix iOS developers is nuts. $700k on one position and $900k for the one that matches what I do now. Do folks really get paid that much?

I’m working on my first ever React Native project as a native iOS developer responsible for providing native support to the React Native application.

It’s an existing native app and the idea is to move toward 100% react native. This is going to be a great deal of fun I think!

I’m sure I’ll have some complaints along the way, but I am really excited to learn more about it.

JonathanGerlach,
@JonathanGerlach@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni I worked on a React Native app for two years. I'm excited to hear what you think about it.
