It's hard to pick favorites, as many of my photos turned out pretty good. So here's a few picked to give you an idea of how varied the show was tonight.

this photo was taken just moments after the previous one. the angle is almost identical, but now the columns are mostly green, with some faint red, purple, and blue also visible
the sky seen straight upwards. the aurora seems to pour down from the heavens like a cosmic shower. it spirals in a great mix of green, purple, red, yellow, and white. some of the sight is blocked by trees, giving it an immense sense of scale
now looking towards the bay again, the aurora seems to emanate from the corner of the frame, spreading outwards in a fan. there's a bright red column in the middles, and many more columns of green around it. they all reflect off the water

Two things:

  • This is a truly life-changing experience. Even understanding how it works, the vast scale and prowess of nature in action makes you feel small.
  • In retrospect, I could have taken more and better pictures, or video but, honestly: I was mainly focused on experiencing the event, and I don't regret that.

The challenge in taking aurora photos is that it is formed by a collection of faint delicate shapes in motion. If you expose for too long, you blur this motion and get mostly just the glow. So you want to keep your exposure time short (I kept mine below 1 sec for most shots), and to use a very fast lens (I had my zoom ƒ/2.8 and ultra-wide ƒ/4). Both could have been better but. regardless, I love the photos I took, and I'll cherish them forever.

I’m curious, northern hemisphere folk. If you were able to see Aurora Borealis last night:

  • Was this your first time?
  • How far ‘south’ are you (roughly - I’m not in the business of doxxing you)?
  • How old are you (again, be as vague as you feel)?

Please do reply and boost. I get the sense that there were a lot of first-timers and a feeling of shared awe last night and I’d love to know just how far that was felt :neofox_heart:

I've managed to ruin two high quality AIWA "walkmans" by trying to replace their caps. One is totally busted, and the other has problems with its muting circuit that I can't figure out.

I'm considering reverse-engineering its PCB and printing brand new ones, ordering fresh parts, and transplanting the ICs over.

Should be a lot of work, but they barely function anyway.

Managed to catch a just-shy-of-X1-class flare a few hours ago when I put my scope out on the deck.

The complex chaos of magnetic fields — that is much, much larger than the size of Earth — designated as Region 3664 and Region 3668 (center right sunspot smudge) has been spawning a great number of flares recently, flinging an truly stupendous amount of energy and relativistic particles out into the solar system.
