Daily reminder that Seagate drives have the highest failure rate and the lowest failure rate of any CMR drive and that WD drives have about 1/2 of the failure rate on average as Seagate drives: extremetech.com/…/331241-backblaze-publishes-stat…

In fact, almost all Ironwolf drives above 10 TB had ridiculous failure rates within the first year or two: arstechnica.com/…/hdds-typically-fail-in-under-3-…

Both WD and Seagate are fine if you do your research into what models are good and bad. For example, get your hand on this Seagate Exos: ST8000NM000A or a WD Ultrastar WUH721816ALE6L4 and you apparently will have a 0% failure rate over 10 years lol.

No brand is overall great. There are great ironwolfs and shit ironwolfs that could fail in the first year. Just like there are shit WD reds (regular reds with shit SMR) and good WD reds (most plus/pros).

Brand loyalty is the stupidest investment a person can make.

I like to think of it as fishing old games out of a dumpster. They were carelessly thrown away, no attempt is made to preserve them or make profit from them.

They are fair game.

I can do that:

Because constantly, throughout the entirety of the corporate controlled internet era we are now in, and I mean constantly as in it is hard to find an exception, anonymous data collection has at some point in the future turned into non-anonymous data collection to sell to data brokers.

Hell, there are a staggering.number of services being caught with ignoring opt-out preferences even and non-anonymously tracking users via identification numbers.

The problem I have with it is that eventually, every single closed source “anonymous” consumer telemetry will eventually become de-anonymized and almost always sold. If any capitalist company sees a cash cow that they aren’t milking, shareholders or rich owners will demand that it be milked.

I would struggle to find a case where it hasn’t happened with any popular software

Over the pond here on belgium we have 2 main consumer brands that are quality: Makita and Bosch.

Then for more professional use there is Festool that is a pretty penny.

Less options but in the US, most of the “options” are owned by the same 2-3 companies anyway.

Except that it seems by default Firefox REFUSES to use a file picker for downloads and will ignore the “choose location” setting on KDE only. Weird.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

Yeah that works for me in cinnamon and gnome, but not KDE.

Just started playing it.

The learning curve is high and I just am finding out how to do basic things (making caravans is a pain in the ass and unintuitive for example)

But I am having fun!

Sustainable

No headphone jack

They actually seem like quality phones when my girlfriend’s friend got one, but seriously? No headphone Jack and force you to use wireless buds that will have to be thrown away when the tiny battery degrades?

I just started rimworld. I am having a hard enough time even having my colony of 5 people and 40 turtles survive through the -20 degree weather without travelling almost at all 😅 a whole other level here. I can’t mine enough resources at home to expand my house as much since there is very little steel.

Shinobi or frigate are fine for that.

Frigate markets itself as “AI detection” but it isn’t required.

Also frigate is open source and.ahinobi is closed source.

I’m going to come in with some actual more hidden gems:

Well damn, then the things that are quick for a contractor but hard to DIY and have it look nice like tiling, flooring, and drywall are probably best left to a professional. Thanks!

I love nuclear energy. Well maybe to strong of a word. I am extremely favorable towards it.

But we needed to go majority nuclear 10-20 years ago...

There are so many nuclear safety regulations and red tape (for good reason) that it makes new reactors being started now not financially profitable. Renewables are mugh much better until the current highly excessible lithium deposits dry up (tons of lithium in the world, but a tiny fraction of it is minable without decimating the environment)

But that brings me to my main point: energy providers are constantly for profit just like leacherous landlords. Basic necessities should be run publically in many cases. If you can get electric prices so low that it is almost free provided a large governmental investment (a mere tiny fraction of the military industrial complex budget) then you could literally turn the world around in 10 years. But that is a pipe dream that will never happen.

Oil companies control all of the energy decisions around the world and will sooner invest in renewables than nuclear.

Why not contribute to the current open source Lemmy mobile app?

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

It was supposed to be fixed in 10.8.10.

It definitely isn't at all.

For me also on the Chromecast app and the android app, subtitles will progressively get more and more and more out if sync until it is like a 2-3 second difference then holds there.

I know that the subtitles I got for the episodes are in sync and on the web app they are in sync.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

The only thing with jellyfin is the constant subtitle issues for years that are very difficult to resolve I guess and inconsistent across different apps. That and sorting of non movie/show content and not respecting folder view.

Other than that, it's pretty much perfect!

Never expect more from lidl 😅

Any small-load tools are fine like screwdrivers, measuring tools, maybe some clamps would be ok, but anything with a motor or that had a lot of force put on it is going to break with the bad metal used.

JustEnoughDucks,

Pi's are very hard to find these days. If you don't want to go full DIY assembly and service setup, then best bet would be a cheap android tablet, maybe rooted with LineageOS if you really don't want an assistant and no tracking, then just use the homeassistant app as a dashboard on it. You can buy a 90 degree power cable so that it isn't too noticable or even a flexible Qi charger adapter and put the charger hidden in a mounting bracket behind it.

Remember everyone, clean out your cold humidifiers at least once a month. Otherwise you are literally just spraying mold spores into the air to breathe in. It is linked to respiratory health problems.

They are great, but need to be well cleaned.
