Yeah the Channel Tunnel hasn’t got close to its potential

But this Wolmar piece is poor

DB proved 2x8 carriage trains are allowed. Safety headaches can be overcome. Not being able to run a e320 into Ashford isn’t Eurostar’s fault. You can’t blame private money used to build the tunnel for all its failings now.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/01/channel-tunnel-uk-european-30th-anniversary

MikaKpk,

@jon Whats the source for the 406 or a likewise EMU being allowed for passenger service in the tunnel? Everytime I read about Eurostar monopoly and the poor connectivity of Eurotunnel services it was that trains need to a) be long enough to stretch between two emergency exits and b) be fully walk-through and c) be operable as a half.

DB (and every high speed operation outside of Eurostar) either has monolithic no-splittable EMUs or Splittable EMUs that aren't walk-through due to having cabs in the middle so that the halfs can be used reasonably in other applications to make them economically viable.

Only thing that comes to mind that could fulfill both would be (if possible under modern crash standards) a revival of the DSB/SNCB rubber nose concept, yet that wouldn't achieve high speeds outside of the tunnel.

Hello nerds!

Does a Laptop with these specs exist on the market?

  • lightweight
  • screen <= 14"
  • able to run a Ubuntu derrivate
  • keyboard that has a windows/super/command key
  • RAM >= 8 GB
  • possiby ARM-based(?)
  • price < 700€

I'm basically looking for the Macbook form-factor for a usecase thats mostly web apps and at a more reasonable price.

Well today is officially the first day procrastination has been rewarded.

I put something in my shopping cart before noon but didn't complete the purchase

I refresh the tab to purchase now

Items have been discounted 60% in the meantime

Once in a while someone says to me “are you on Instagram” and I reply yes, but I am seldom there.

And then log in.

And am repulsed by it all over again.

My feed is so full of ads and irrelevant stuff the algorithm promotes, and pretty much no interesting content from people I follow.

MikaKpk,

@jon I keep getting asked by people I meet with similar interests (transport nerds) irl if I have instagram and I'm contemplating making one with no content just links to the social media I actually use.

But I guess it wouldn't matter, those who use Instragram don't use Masto, Bluesky or Twitter and vice versa

MikaKpk,

@jon I mean I never used it, all I know about is from watching other people use it that it seems to be the third place after Twitter where Tiktok videos are reuploaded and the rest of the content is "beauty" people posting unhealthy lifestyle tips and selfies? At least thats what I think it is 😂

MikaKpk,

@jon @realmos Its very rare but on both UK trips I encountered one Guard who never heard of Interrail or saw a continental format ticket and just exclaimed that what I showed to him can't possibly be a train ticket.

But to me insisting that it very much is and they should ask someone higher up if they don't believe me both just ended up eventually leaving me alone with an annoyed grunt and giving me weird looks when passing me again during the journey 🤷‍♂️

Oh and someone at the LNER First Class Lounge in Edinburgh claimed that "this is not a ticket. Also we don't have a scanner for phone tickets", I asked how do they let in customers with UK phone tickets, he said "if they show us in the LNER app its fine" lmao what 😂

finally found a solution to the problem that you can't simultaneously have two SIM cards and an SD card on this phone

MikaKpk,

@kkarhan @Fairphone I have Fairphone already on my watchlist for when I truly need to replace my current one, as it's the most "classic" offering with a removable battery. Still, omission of the second sim slot and audio out is a hard to understand fail at the finish line, those parts cost almost nothing, others removed them for a trendy design or water resistance, Fairphone does neither of those, so whats against giving us a truly versatile smartphone like ten years ago before enshittification hit, just with modern hard and software? 🙄

MikaKpk,

@MastaBro @kkarhan @Fairphone half the phone companies don't support it, transferring to a backup is hard, its a good idea in theory but a poor implementation in practice.

The Dutch state railway NS will soon sell parts from ICMm trains that are to be scrapped in minimum quantities of 100 pieces.

Among other things, these absolute classics featured on all kinds of trains, trams and metros built between 95 and 2010, which are almost never legally available. Anyone else here fancying a nerdy doorbell? 👀

Good morning, hope you all have a great day!

jon, to random German
@jon@gruene.social avatar

When I am NOT working on railway policy, and would have time to work on ferries, I'd work to make it a legal obligation that every ferry everywhere has to carry foot passengers

MikaKpk,

@jon This seems to often be less of a problem of the ferry itself and more of the port company failing to provide suitable facilities, sometimes they don't even have footpaths for anyone that isn't staff with a hi-vis vest (those places are easily spotted by the fact that ferries will take you if you add a bike as your vehicle, Dunkirk ferryport is such a case if I remember correctly its impossible to book Dunkirk - Dover on foot but you can book it on just a bike)

MikaKpk, to random German

Has anyone ever honestly used nearby share?

If yes, what the heck did you transfer between mobile devices that Bluetooth data rates did not suffice?

MikaKpk,

Doing more research on this reveals that there aren't just two incompatible implementations of this technology yet.

Nah there are at least 3 mainstream implementations (Apple, Google, Microsoft) with Google and MS versions being named almost the same and there is software available for the respective other operating system but you need to manually install software on at least one system if sharing between Android and Windows

And I'm not even counting all the Android flavours that come with yet another incompatible implementation of "find devices via Blutooth, then set up a direct Wifi-Connection between both". At least everything that uses MIUI and Samsung seem to have one yet another one

And why? Because every single implementation is so poor in execution (for the end user) that it isn't device bound but user account bound. So every large tech company that has user accounts wants their own incompatible solution that works only with their own user accounts.

If they'd instead implemented a device discovery in the wifi standard IN THE FIRST PLACE we would just have a one size fits all solution for everyone but apple AS IT SHOULD BE what is this madness

And as usual doing anything on a Desktop Linux requires you to go through a hundred hoops, if anything the Google implementation seems to be possible to use here but also last progress was 2020 lol

MikaKpk,

Also I quickly tried sharing from Windows 10 to Android via Bluetooth, aka the one baseline that we have for this task and I have no idea what some people complained about the share implementation in Windows, it works really well? Right click in Explorer and hit "send to... Bluetooth device"? Yes it throws some ancient Win 7 UI but it works fine for me. Bizarrely the other way round Windows doesn't throw up the "accept/deny" dialogue for an incoming Bluetooth transfer and so it just times out.

MikaKpk,

What surprisingly almost none of these supports is a simple file transfer while in the same IPv4 network. Local traffic in a network is almost never monitored by router-bound firewalls and most phone-to-PC transfers of large amounts of photos happen at home while both are in the same local network

Microsofts implementation seems to support it when sharing between two Windows PCs but then once again we've had ways to share between two PCs on the same network ever since networks were invented 🤷

MikaKpk,

And so we're back to the only other baseline that really everyone supports (it seems that its not possible to transfer files via Bluetooth from a non Apple device to an Apple device so not even that works here? But well, both have a Browser and internet acces...) which stupidly enough is often the most reliable solution: Upload to a cloud on device A, immediately download from cloud on device B. And its insane that this is the most workable solution for a surprisingly simple problem that we used to have figured out 20 years ago.

Kind of wish this would be more of a thing tbh, English as the lingua franca of the entire globe is here to stay whether we like it or not, and the world should agree on some sort of official "international english" standard, that would be neither UK or US centric

In Polish schools (and in most of Europe I think), the English being taught is British English, and the British accent and pronunciation of words is presented as the "proper and right" one 🥴

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_English

MikaKpk,

@MiaWinter @endali Also from Germany and we didn't have a specific bias in class either. I had english teachers that spent years in the UK and another who spent a longer time in the US and that shaped their personal accents, in terms of english-language media I consume UK and US stuff and for most region-specific words I couldn't even name which flavour they're from and if its just spelling differences I write them as whatever seems more logical to me.

E.g. I typically spell colour with "ou" because in my head it sounds that way, but center with "er" because you don't say "centre" in spoken language

My spoken english is somewhat close to southern UK apparently, but I have no idea why.
