Virtually Real

"We each live in our own perceptual universe, no two sensoria are exactly alike, but, because we all live in the same physical universe, we imagine it is a shared whole, its entirety common to us all. But our perceptual worlds are as unique as we each are, each unique perceptual world adding to the creation of the whole of reality."

Ooze, to Signal

Today I discovered that you can only edit a #signal message a maximum of ten times. I had been keeping a record of a series of events over a number of days and adding new info as it happened, hoping to be able to send a single message at the end, but it finally refused to commit an edit saying ten edits is the max.

Have any good investigative journalists done pieces on how the slant of donors, the power of large universities "strategic communications" departments, and the evisceration of newsrooms have affected how the public gets access to reliable scientific research and information in the public interest? @academicchatter

@ml @academicchatter I too wish to know the answer to this question.

    @thomasfuchs This reminds me of a talk I gave about ethics in software development in which (in 2019!) I pointed out the evils of FB and Google and a question actually was "For those of us who don't have the privilege of leaving these firms what other things can we do to improve ethics?" Turns out "not have the privilege" meant that they couldn't make as much money anywhere else. To paraphrase myself from that talk, if you want an ethical outcome you have to make ethics your highest priority every single time. There is a link to the talk in my profile fyi.

    Did another thrift store visit today. Grabbed 49 CDs for $1 each. It's such a great time to grab physical media before people realize streaming platforms aren't the answer.

    @gnitro I reckon its a bit late. The price of records has gone through the roof the last couple of years.

    @gnitro in the last couple of years here in Australia used record and cd shops have been opening up and any half decent album is going for $50.

    “In religion and politics, on the contrary, though there is as yet nothing approaching scientific knowledge, everybody considers it de rigueur to have a dogmatic opinion, to be backed up by inflicting starvation, prison, and war, and to be carefully guarded from argumentative competition with any different opinion.”

    Right. It has happened. My institution now wants to develop teaching materials for a course by literally just running my papers through an LLM to "simplify" them. Have told the person requesting this my opinions on this idea.

    @jimbob What's the NTEU like these days? When I was in it no one was even interested in standing up for the things that were already in the award, and if one got the union involved one was a pariah. For me it was unpaid marking.

    Ooze,
    @Ooze@aus.social avatar

    @jimbob Seems like a good opportunity to encourage them to expedite some action.

    I mean, basically they are asking you to comit academic malpractice so you are within your rights to refuse.

    ANZAC day, the 25th April, is one of the most solemn days in , commemorating the first great battle Australia took part in as a nation - the storming of the beach in what is now known as "ANZAC Cove", Türkiye on April 25, 1915 as part of . stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, the name for the joint force of the two young nations, forever joined in solidarity and mateship.

    Lest, we forget.

    @CoinOfNote @histodons @numismatics ANZAC day marks the first time that Australian and New Zealand soldiers died fighting in a war that in no way threatened our countries, in aid of an imperial power who threw away our soldiers' lives because of incompetence.

    Ooze,
    @Ooze@aus.social avatar

    @CoinOfNote @histodons @numismatics May we never stop asking why we do war.

    Is bravery not wasted on destruction in a facile cause? It can be more nobley deployed.

    Much of the focus on ANZAC day glorifies war instead of grieving for and then preventing it.

    Ooze,
    @Ooze@aus.social avatar

    @CoinOfNote @histodons @numismatics Your point is valid for those who were drafted and sent to Vietnam. Those who volunteer for the military at any time knowingly surrender their morals to those they are thus sworn to obey.

    While it is true that, since the Nuremberg principles, soldiers are alleged to be able to refuse an immoral order, the likelihood of being shot should one chose to do so means the only sure way to not be forced to act against one's morals is not to enlist at all.
