Last night the aurora was lovely, so, rather than heading somewhere remote, I sat in my back garden and enjoyed the view. Here's a 90 minute exposure taken twixt 22:22 and 23:52.

No 2.5 hour road trip to witness an aurora last night. I slummed it in my back garden!

Coronal Aurora, as seen from Lake Aviemore, 00:34 on 12/5/2024. In a coronal aurora, lines converge at the magnetic zenith in a stunning "crown" shape It's beautiful

I'd conservatively describe the last night as life-alteringly magnificent. I've always wanted to see the lights and I'm thrilled it's finally happened - right in my backyard! I'm not much of a photographer, but I'm sure glad I brought my (old, very entry-level) camera.

After seeing the in action - the colour, the movement, towering overhead a way that photos and videos simply cannot do justice to - I can see why the Lights were so frequently attributed to gods

An Absolutely stunning, one in a lifetime solar event has occurred over the weekend. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be taking a photo of an Aurora lighting up the whole sky near where I lived.

People:
The universe is giving us the intense aurora sightings because it knew we need to see beauty in the world right now

Me, an autistic:
No. It's just solar storms.

There are moments when you have to say, Mother nature is awesome. One such moment occurred at Lake Aviemore last night at 02:25:45. This is three five second exposures combined to make a panorama. WOW!

I may have slightly gone a bit batshit crazy when the sky did this at Lake Aviemore last night. This is a fisheye lens image during the height of the display. Seriously. WOAH!

🖤 #GothLife #AuroraGothstralis #auroraaustralis

You know that "famous" Wānaka tree? It's not as good as the upside down aurora tree I found tonight at my secret aurora perch!

I'm at 33.5°N latitude, and my friends saw the Northern Lights last night at even 31.9°N latitude. Is anyone here closer to the equator than that (North or South) and saw the Northern or Southern Lights? . Apparently, in 1859, people saw them from Hawai'i, and that must have really been something!

One of the more intense patches of colour from the Aurora Australis I observed a couple of hours ago or so.

A huge event to show so well so far north, and in the light pollution. Could make it out with the naked eye, and my Pixel picked it up just fine in astrophotography mode.

I got some time lapse with moving sheets, but they're a bit artifacty. Do you want to see them or just enjoy all the better shots that people have been getting?

One of the 10 second snaps from the time lapse with the DSLR. Will process tomorrow.

It was so bright it cast a shadow at this stage.

Not a patch on some of the amazing shots I'm seeing, but as I'm laid up with Covid this is the best shot I've managed of the looking out onto the street from my front porch tonight.

Just insane colours. (3 second exposure, handheld on iPhone 13 mini.)
