When someone plays their music loudly on a portable speaker on public transit, there's sometimes a guy that shouts at them to turn that shit off repeatedly until they start turning purple.

As proven again today, I am that guy.

Reminds me of this scene from Star Trek IV. There was a cheer in my theatre performance when this happened!

"HTML should be coded to represent the data that will be populated and not based on its default presentation styling. Presentation (how it should look), is the sole responsibility of CSS."

What weird & impossible worlds these tech folks dream up! Imagine thinking that data was something pure and meaningful regardless of its presentation and then thinking it should have a default presentation anyway, just in case, and then thinking folks wouldn't read the default presentation into its meaning.

PlaneSailingGames,
@PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org avatar

@epidiah where is that quoted from?

One wonders whether they would eschew the mass of semantically meaningless DIVs which infest every html page in order to provide ‘hooks’ for the css.

In many ways I preferred the www of the 90’s

Has anyone seen any indication that Amazon Prime in the UK will start to include ads? Everything I’ve seen today seems to only be USA (but the news outlets act like the USA is all there is 🙄) and I’ve not had any email about it.

@Marcus I’ll probably say goodbye to prime of that happens. I hope it really blows up in their faces.

US Update based on in wastewater:

▪️ 1 of every 29 Americans is now infectious.
▪️ A room with 20 people is likely to include someone with COVID.
▪️ COVID is spreading more than during 95% of the pandemic.
▪️ We'll see 2M new infections daily before this peaks in two weeks.
▪️ We're adding between 600,000 and 2.3M new cases of Long COVID each week.
▪️ We could now be in the 2nd-worst surge of the pandemic. (We won't know for a week or two due to data lags.)

i love retrotech space opera because space colonisation inadvertently answers the question of why their technology looks so clunky and backwards

when you send your colonists off to live self-sufficiently they need machines that 1) are hardened against the environment, and 2) can be repaired without requiring facilities capable of highly advanced material science

that means simplicity, redundancy, and likely also flexibility (for example, every electronic device is built around the same FPGA)

PlaneSailingGames,
@PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org avatar

@yukamichi in the battlestar galactica reboot i like the way that they were able to use the museum quality galactica because it’s technology was so simple it wasn’t amenable to be taken over by the cylon AI

My mind returns to John Scott Tynes' legendary series of pieces about his experiences working at pre-Hasbro WotC and how it all went to corporate shit.

Tynes was just a generational talent. Great designer, wonderful writer, genius-level troll.

It is Christmas.
So take a breather and let me tell you a story about London, trains, love and loss, and how small acts of kindness matter.

I'm going to tell you about the voice at Embankment Tube station.

Just before Christmas 2012, staff at Embankment Tube station were approached by a woman who was very upset.

She kept asking them where the voice had gone. They weren't sure what she meant.

The Voice?

@MarkHoltom You’ve directly stolen this from something written up on twitter by John Bull in 2019. Why are you passing it off as your own?

@danderson@hachyderm.io avatar

Wow, TIL near where I grew up in France, high-speed rail (the TGV) caused tangible reduction in passenger air traffic. The budget airlines shut off the routes as soon as the TGV started running, unable to compete. The larger airlines kept trying for ten years, but eventually gave up as well. Turns out, 2-3 hours on a comfortable train that drops you in the middle of town is better than faffing around in airports, despite the trip time being just 1h.

Just a thought, North America.

PlaneSailingGames,
@PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org avatar

@danderson UK wishes train travel were just… affordable. A train from London to Scotland probably costs 5x more than a flight 🙁

I may need somewhere with large bandwidth to do some backups where my home internet is not really suitable. However, internet cafés are a thing of the past. I just need a physical connection and fast speeds for a few hours to do some backups. Is there a name for such a place and do they exist?

Pretty much any coffee shop has moderately decent wifi now. Internet cafes have become cafe internet!

Heading to on Saturday? I'm running two fantastic panels: at noon 'What Board Games Mean To Me' with Sir Ian Livingstone, Matt @forbeck.com, plus the inventor of Jenga and other great guests in the Bourg room (plus book signing afterwards!)

Then at 17:00 I'm chairing 'Oldies But Goodies', about classic games of all sorts, with Ian McAllister and @mattthr.bsky.social from Cult of the Old, and games historian @hollynielsen.bsky.social, in the Alsace room.

See you at Dragonmeet!

Yet another reason to not buy ebooks from a store that doesn't let you have the files available locally in a way that you can still use them once the reader/hardware goes away.

This is why I moved from Nooks to Kobos -- B&N dropped mac support so any new purchase could vanish at any time, which sucks. I am happy to exchange money for ebooks (and, looking at my library, do a bit more than I probably ought) but I would like to keep reading them into the future.

Sorry for my brevity! I didn't mean that open systems are magic, just that systems where you rent access to remote data is super-vulnerable in a way that, say, locally storable PDFs or ePub documents are not.

It's one of the good things about so many applications moving to open (or relatively open) formats.

Of course, DRM encumbering acts against this by adding another level of hindrance that can kill long life.
