Bungie’s classic sci-fi shooter Marathon is now free on Steam https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/10/24153867/marathon-bungie-shooter-steam-release-date-price

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@petrescatraian As @verge stated in the article, you can play them with the open source Aleph One engine for free. One of the reasons that was even possible was because Bungie had allowed the release of the original Mac OS & Windows binaries (though not source) and map files quite a number of years ago: https://trilogyrelease.bungie.org

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@petrescatraian @verge I believe that the "standalone Marathon files" mentioned on https://alephone.lhowon.org/games/marathon.html for use with Aleph One are derived from those downloads and don't include the Window/Mac OS binaries, level editors, etc.

(Edited to remove incorrect statement about Steam version of Marathon having higher resolution graphics.)

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@petrescatraian @verge I really don't understand why there isn't a Linux version on Steam since the macOS & Windows versions provided are just using the Aleph One engine anyway.

it occured to me that if the web is full of junk (like ai-generated seo content etc), are there search engines where you can create and share with others your own (potentially big) sets of domains to include in the search? (edit for clarification: people would cobble together their own curated subset(s) of the web and just ignore the junk)

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@mntmn I mean, really seems like del.icio.us or pinboard.in with deeper search. Are there open source tagged bookmark solutions?

@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

On this day, I want to say that I'm still very impressed with 's technical achievements. Like mini-LED displays on the before, the "tandem OLED" is a smart solution. With their fancy event presentations, Apple makes everything seem obvious, but it's clear that — while many have been loudly proclaiming dissatisfaction that Apple hadn't switched to OLED already — they've been focusing on creating the best in looking/performing/efficient display they can manufacture.

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

I know that sounds all fanboy-ish, but I'm writing this on a 12.9in iPad Pro (5th generation) from 2021 and until today's announcement of an escape key — vim user here! — on the new Magic Keyboard and the nano-textured glass option, I don't actually feel like it needs an upgrade. Even the battery is holding up well (except for when I play Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, but that's a different matter entirely.)

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

I still have my 10.5in iPad Pro that I purchased in 2018 and it looks and functions great, though the battery is finally getting pretty weak. The main reason I upgraded from it to the 12.9" iPad Pro (5th gen) was that the Smart Folio Keyboard had disintegrated (not all their products are perfect) and I wanted a slightly larger display as it was my primary "workstation" (at home and on the road).

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

Moreover, we still have a perfectly functional iPad mini 2 that only doesn't get used because it can't run a new-enough version of iOS.

Apple products work better and last longer than they ever have. The problem is the reduction in repairability (batteries & storage, I'm looking at you) and the lack of support for custom OSes.

Other than my iPad, I only use pre-T2 chip Intel Macs so I can easily run #OpenBSD on them. They're more than performant enough for me, but not very energy efficient.

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@nicky Yup, still using on . My current workstation -- aside from my iPad -- is a 2015 13in MacBook Air (dual-core i7) and it also is good at not gulping electricity (though not quite the dainty sips of the iPad.)

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@nicky Shout-out to @solene for the obsdfreqd which is much better at controlling/optimizing CPU frequency than #OpenBSD's built-in apmd(8).

I take it the “run macOS on an iPad” situation is still “should technically be possible, some people managed it, but a truckload of work to make work in practice”? Or is there something like the jailbreak installers of old that make it risky but straightforward?

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@oktawian @uliwitness Apple seem to make Logic & Final Cut run pretty well (though I realize the OS is lighter-weight and memory management different.) Also, Apple Silicon chips really do have very fast storage access, so use of swap is almost undetectable in most use cases.

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@oktawian @uliwitness I would certainly never suggest an iPad as a primary device for high-end video or audio editing, but they perform very well for what would have been considered moderate just a few years ago and high-end just a few years prior to that. However, I highly suspect that we have different backgrounds, experiences, and standards.

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@oktawian @uliwitness I have spent the last year using a 2.2GHz dual-core i7 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM (soldered) as my primary workstation and it's not as bad as one might think. I do run a pretty light-weight OS () and X11 WM (), but the former isn't the most I/O optimized OS and even it's barely noticeable when it starts swapping. I always oversize SSD storage though, to delay failure through wear-leveling.

Apple announces M4 with more CPU cores and AI focus, just months after M3

Aggressive update schedule is a major departure for Apple Silicon.

@acdha @maxoakland @arstechnica Also, searching for textual descriptions in the Photos app. That's all done on-device and has been for years.

I recently had to find pictures of tires (tyres) I had taken a couple years ago and dreaded trying to scroll back that far. Typed in "tires", it showed me 2047 car photos I have taken at car shows, and the top "Moment" was just the photos of the stack of tires I was looking for.

I thought it was good that they clarified "Neural Engine" means "AI".

As I've had a number of weekends traveling to visit family the last couple of months, I've been repeatedly listening to William Gibson's Neuromancer, read by the author. I love that version!

It made me realize that, aside from Johnny Mnemonic, I never got around to reading the remainder of the sprawl trilogy, nor the other short stories set in that universe. So, this week, I've been reading Gibson's early works from archived OMNI magazines.

It's been an absolute pleasure to just read.

How OpenBSD is dealing with the xz problem (as seen on the OpenBSD.ports mailing list). This package is not in the base system (it is on my laptop, though):

'Re: archivers/xz: update to 5.6.1' - MARC https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports&m=171174950828153&w=2

#xz #openbsd

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@mattdm @passthejoe Why doesn't it inspire confidence?

xz is not in the base #OpenBSD install, must be installed separately by users, and even then is not used by ssh under OpenBSD. Per https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4:

"openssh does not directly use liblzma. However debian and several other
distributions patch openssh to support systemd notification, and libsystemd
does depend on lzma."

#OpenBSD has no systemd either.

I generally run -stable on my workstation to try to dogfood what non-developers are likely running when developing/testing ( Macintosh-like Virtual Window Manager) and my other utilities like (https://github.com/morgant/swupdate-openbsd). One of this month's tasks is to dust off my WIP fixes to the USB serial driver, plus the 7.5 release is right around the corner, so I have updated my 2015 MacBook Air workstation to -current.

Nerd-Advice needed: Lots of software does not work on my old (2011) anymore. Any Idea what to install? Simply ? Or should I try , or ? Or something esoteric like Plan 9? The device in question is not in heavy use, rather a kitchen-computer for simple tasks.

@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@jedes_jahr_ein_neues_protokoll The CPU and iGPU in the 2011 MacBook Pro (13", 15", and 17") should be well supported under . I don't recall if the mobile in the 15" & 17" support acceleration under the latest MESA drivers or not, but should work fine in .

Was supposed to work with clients in today, but stopped in due to car issues. With all the rain last night and this morning, there's a floodwatch and the looked high, so figured I'd stay here and handle things remotely.

It has now stopped raining, but it's already at moderate flood level:

Anyone else have the rubber peeling away around their most-used keys on their iPad Magic Keyboard? Mine is three years old, but you can use a MacBook for 10 years and not see anything like this because they don’t make them out of rubber.

Close-up photo of a black iPad Magic Keyboard with the rubber peeling away around the E and R keys.

morgant,
@morgant@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Interesting. Thinking further, I almost always clean mine with iKlear on a microfiber cloth, rarely — though not never — with alcohol. I would hypothesize that alcohol from the occasional wipe down might be more likely to collect at the key edges, weakening the adhesive, and that the more frequent warming/cooling cycles from backlight use might further deteriorate it. Seems feasible over the period of years, but probably just as likely a minute difference at assembly time.
