As I just posted elsewhere online:

“Oh my fucking god is this how thinking should work?!? What the hell. What the fuck. You all didn’t have this all the time did you? And not tell me?”

First adhd medication dose. This is really, really clear.

ajlanes,

@NanoRaptor That sounds amazing - congratulations! Makes me think I should summon the activation energy to get diagnosed etc.

@ajlanes Life is absurd, to get from here to there we should be able to quantum tunnel through that hill.

@NanoRaptor yeaaaaaaah. I went to cry when I realised.

@NanoRaptor

Mid-life diagnosis? That just happened to me a month ago.

"So I didn't have to be internally screaming at myself all this time for my brain to move in a straight line all this time? EGAD."

Good grief, I could have had an actual career in tech instead of getting sidelined by my lack of focus.

@NanoRaptor

It's tragic that there's so much #ADHD #misinformation out there.

I had so many people tell me I DON'T have ADHD because of my hyperfocus.

I only realized I did (and did get properly tested as well) because of randomly coming across ADHD videos on youtube shorts (an awful platform, but there's always a silver lining, I suppose. ;)

@RL_Dane That's it! diagnosis by gp, psychologist, then psychiatrist who could actually medicate, here.

Happy to say day 2, this time at work, was as great as the first one was around family.

Kind of glad it kept me out of web development though, still not sure I could have handled that medicated :)

@NanoRaptor

Yeah, pretty sure us folks old enough to know how a computer is supposed to work would need to be lobotomized to use something like react. :P

@NanoRaptor congrats! it was such a major change for me, I hope it works out for you too :)

@acf@masto.alancfrancis.com avatar

@NanoRaptor I’ve been really keen to try meds but not so keen to go through a multi year process with the NHS for a diagnosis. It’s like I want a months meds to try and if they work, I’ll do the diagnosis time to get more.

NanoRaptor,
@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social avatar

@acf I’ve heard the delays here too. I got so lucky. Country town with country psychs and access to city Telehealth. End of Feb to now total.

Along with two years joking “haha I’m so ADHD” and not knowing.

acf,
@acf@masto.alancfrancis.com avatar

@NanoRaptor that’s brilliant! Are you worried about losing “the good bits” at all ?

NanoRaptor,
@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social avatar

@acf I was before this but less so now. I don’t know how it will pan out from here but what I see I like. I really had a very low level of functioning that needed SO MUCH WORK to get through.

SolraBizna,

@NanoRaptor Yep.

For me it was like I was trying to drive down a highway without a steering wheel. Sometimes I could jank the car into pointing forward for a few hundred meters, but no matter what I did, it would eventually veer to one side and grind against the walls.

And then, after my first dose of ADHD meds, a steering wheel appeared in front of me. My response was "The fuck is this?" followed shortly by "HAS EVERYONE ELSE HAD ONE OF THESE ALL ALONG?!"

violator,
@violator@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@NanoRaptor what's it like

NanoRaptor,
@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social avatar

@violator it’s like I can be distracted by a thing and it doesn’t immediately dump all other thoughts and memory. The previous thoughts are there and accessible and I can put them in a place they need to be. And if the distraction turns out to be just that, a distraction I don’t need to attend to, I can just find every one of the previous thoughts I had and return to them without effort. I have never been able to do that before. And here it’s happening as I type. I know what I was doing before

bartreardon,
@bartreardon@aus.social avatar

@NanoRaptor @violator For me the biggest reveal was task paralysis. WTH do you mean people can just start something whenever and not sit there like there's an invisible force field in your way?

NanoRaptor,
@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social avatar

@bartreardon @violator Ill have to look out for that one tomorrow! Back to work after a long weekend and it hits me from time to time there mostly.

Distraction was my big thing. “Dana how’s your morning?” Would empty my head of everything and I’d almost have to re derive where I even was in the world after I answer.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@NanoRaptor @bartreardon @violator

I have a status indicator on my task bar that constantly outputs the last line of my work log so that if someone asks me what I'm working on I CAN ACTUALLY TELL THEM SOMETHING instead of looking at them blankly.

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

@NanoRaptor @bartreardon @violator

Yeah, the distraction and lack of motivation/focus were the 2 big ones I noticed. “You mean normal people can decide to do something and then just…do it? FUCK ALL OF Y’ALL.”

I felt elated at finally being able to function on a basic level, and angry that so much of my life had been such a (needless) struggle before.

NanoRaptor,
@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social avatar

@KydiaMusic @bartreardon @violator just tonight here at mums (while I’m around someone for my first dose) I’m doing things automatically that I’d wanted to start and never completed before. Like tidying for her and little helpful things I know make her life easier. It’s happening automatically. And it’s not work to push myself to do it.
