US summer surge of #COVID19—hopefully modest—is starting. Biobot & NWSS report small increases in the past week (particularly in the West & possibly South) driven by a new wave of immune-evasive variants. Nationally, COVID in wastewater is near our 12-month low point last summer. Outdoor activities may help limit this surge. A room with 25 people has an 18% chance of including someone infectious.

RWANDA BILL

Just a reminder that it is not "unconstitutional" for House of Lords to delay a controversial Bill.

The Parliament Acts make this a feature of our constitution.

The House of Commons can be asked to think again in next parliamentary session. If passed again, then an Act.

In the current circumstances, a year's delay even gives the opportunity for the government to seek a mandate for the Rwanda Bill at the general election.

Public health is dead.

US CDC: "Americans who test positive for the coronavirus no longer need to routinely stay home from work and school for five days under new guidance planned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

“Public health has to be realistic, In making recommendations to the public today, we have to try to get the most out of what people are willing to do.”

Why be right and do your job when you can be "realistic," instead?

@augieray 😱 Unbelievably irresponsible and totally ignoring all the scientific knowledge so far accumulated on this virus and it’s longer term implications. I hope that people making these decisions are sued for the damage they do, both to physical health and due to the impact of that poor health, disability etc. on the economy.

The ruling followed so swiftly by 11 countries withdrawing funding from the (ie, cutting aid reaching Gaza) is despicable beyond words.

I have never ever felt so profoundly alienated. From those in power in my countries (UK and Germany) from the majority consensus, from my family. We are not the good ones.

I don’t understand why anyone would assume something to be correct when the only accusation seems to have come from a very biased source. Is there any evidence from an independent, objective source or sources? Why have certain countries been so quick to jump on the bandwagon?

Has anybody else noticed we can no longer get free rapid lateral flow tests online in England even if we have a health or age issue that means we are more at risk of serious illness? I got some a few weeks ago. Now I have to go to a pharmacy and convince them that I’m entitled. Several people I know have become ill in the last few weeks. It appears that cases are rising quite rapidly and the party season is starting making spread more likely. What happened to public health & protection of pop?

Oh! Also, if you have a condition that means you are allowed treatment for Covid, you may not register a positive test result online. They really don’t want people to know how much of this disease is about, nor have the information to help reduce its spread. Is this legal or moral?

So you can only get a free test from a pharmacy if you’re eligible. You can’t report result because you’re eligible. You can’t report a paid for test. So nobody can report test results? Have I got that right? It can’t be correct as it would imply that nobody can report positive tests. They don’t tend to test in hospitals either. What is going on??

Of course is claiming he has brought down ... but the actual Q. which he should be asked is: what exactly did he do to bring it down?

And of course the answer is sweet FA.... he's been too busy playing party politics to be attending to real issues.... and if he then claims its the BoE what done it, then the Q, is at what medium term cost...

I have a vague memory that I read an economist saying something along the lines that the inflation rate would halve anyway and that Sunak would have been told that. In which case he was simply claiming to promise something that he already knew would happen. No magic wand! Nothing! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not just insulting but dishonest to attempt to con the public.

    What worries me is that the incompetence and lack of caring for the population continues. The pandemic is not over, but they pretend it is. All the mitigations and vaccinations that could, and one might argue should, be going on are not. Imo the government are behaving in a criminal manner putting thousands of lives and quality of life, now and in the future, at risk.

    @ttpphd I’ve scheduled my booster but I’m in the UK. The pharmacy didn’t appear to be able to tell me what booster I would get. I suspect that it’s not an updated one, but we shall see.
