RupertReynolds

@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io

Born at less than 320ppm CO₂.

Programmer and bus driver. It's a long story :-)

Based northern UK & Scotland

Europhile, especially since I worked 1½ years in north Holland.

Currently: C#, C, the language that shall not be named

#Assembly (for fun) on Intel PC and IBM #mainframe (emulated, these days. Download and unzip "TK4-" and you can play, as well).

#rexx #PL1 #SAS too.

Also other things, including a compiler for a new language. That should be ready in a decade. Or 2.

As opposed to “3am in the afternoon”?

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@mansr @revk Madness. Especially considering that the 'm' is short for 'meridian', where we'd expect the sun to be highest at 12:00 hours but with DST it happens at 13:00 instead :-)

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@revk @mansr Fair comment :-)
I've never lived further than 2.535°W, which isn't quite enough to notice these things.

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@mansr @revk That one's beyond my mental model.

To me, inclination (of the Earth's axis) only affects how high the sun appears.

@mjg59 I'm so sheltered, I didn't know about a Mr Coffee machine available in The Big Room :-)

I may have found an alternative solution to my blog's commenting system! 😺

The synchronization of comments from my Mastodon account. It's something I tried and abandoned, but I'm giving it another try after reading your comments. Well, I explain more on the blog and also share the source code:

Blog post, source code, and demo:

Bonus: Because I'm happy, here's a happy Mastodon mascot as a postman that I painted this morning.

A great story via @Edent:

A customer complained that their bank was spelling their name incorrectly. The bank refused to solve the issue because it didn't have support for diacritical marks on US mainframe era software, so the customer raised a GDPR complaint under Article 16, sued and won!

"EBCDIC is incompatible with GDPR"
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2021/10/ebcdic-is-incompatible-with-gdpr/

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@villares @Edent Worth pointing out that the mainframes using EBCDIC were doing useful work nearly 20 years before the first PC soiled its first nappy.

And those PCs used 7-bit ASCII, which was equally as limiting as EBCDIC, maybe slightly worse.

Yes, of course they should be updating their software for one of the Unicode encodings (UTF-8 or UTF-32 would be my choices), but it's not trivial when all the code, using either EBCDIC or ASCII was based on the assumption that
1 byte = 1 character.

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@villares @Edent How's your S/360 era assembly, PL/I, COBOL?

OK I'm not completely serious, but I'd think twice before tackling old code with £billions at stake, and probably not many unit tests still saved from the olden daze :-)

Tricky as ideally done on black background... I'll try things out a bit.

@revk Daft question, maybe... I see from a rapid web search that it has Micro USB--does that mean I could program it with no investment in development boards? Just a serial connection via USB cable?

I may have a plan for when my current 'smart' watch (used only for date+time) loses the will to live :-)

We're not going to lie - Our DP @BeanieCam would get out of their Volt and buy something else if they had the money (which they sadly don’t)... but what would make YOU dump your existing car and get another one?

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@show @BeanieCam
Given the money, I'd buy a town car (EV) right now.

So saying, my current car (22 year-old, 1.2 litre Renault Clio) does everything I need.

But it suffers from short journeys (as all ICE do) and I need to take it for a longer run every week, for no good reason except to heat the oil and drive off any retained water and unburned fuel.

For the one long road trip I do each year, I could rent a bigger car, or just take the small roads and stop for coffee+sandwich more often :-)

Forgive this old man moment:

I am seeing the dollar sign get put at the end of a dollar figure ( ex: 200$ ) more and more frequently and it's really starting to get to me.

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@TechConnectify Not just you.
Currency belongs on the left in most countries.
The only thing that might change my mind would be using the currency symbol as the decimal point, the same way as we use R in resistor values (1.2 Ohms written as 1R2), but that only made sense to me because we couldn't type Ω before we had Unicode.

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@amberage @TechConnectify I still see €200 a lot in text. Also in Netherlands and Austria, and in the wikipedia article on the Euro.

But I see quite a lot of other EU members prefer 200€.

I need to do battery level next I think. But this is 1 second each minute with no WiFi at all. Does WiFi on hour to time sync, etc. So my guess is we are in to the “several weeks” battery life now. Then need a few watch faces and a menu system, and step counter…
All open source C under IDF.

@revk Talking of conventional current in a wire being arse-about-face, I've just remembered that the 'North' of a magnet points to the north pole.

@revk Sorry to bug you, but please can you recommend a really hassle-free Bluetooth audio module to use as an audio source for a class 'A' amp I'm making? It's a one-off, so unit price isn't likely to be an issue. Sound quality is.

Analogue (stereo) only required, & it must be possible to prevent it auto-connecting to phones etc.

I vaguely Linear being recommended, but I'm not seeing what I found at that time.

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@revk Oh well. I'll report back if I find a good'n :-)

Ok, anyone want to pull the physics apart on this?

https://www.ebord.co

Even if a m², pulling enough from ambient indoor light will struggle to sensibly charge a phone. That, and inductive charging “anywhere” on the surface is less than simple…

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@revk My experience of solar cells indoors is limited to unwrapping them, checking output current under a LED table lamp or tungsten-halogen torch with a DMM, and thinking they're faulty, until I take them outside and they start working.

The reason seems obvious, now I think: comfortable lighting levels indoors are orders of magnitude below sunlight, which can damage the human retina in a fraction of a second.

RupertReynolds,
@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io avatar

@penguin42 @revk I wonder how many years one of those indoor cells would take to recover its cost, either in money or in CO₂?
