I was wrong. Now I'm getting slick-talking wannabe religious leaders telling me to pray, all from Hallow Inc. And they keep coming, must have spent a fortune on this campaign.

I don't pretend that Hamas and other resistance fighters in Palestine are innocent. But the world will only be able to judge them after the full truth comes out.

In the most glorious "fuck you" I have seen in a while, you know the book that Cumberland City Council banned because they're homophobic bigots - Holly Duhig's "A focus on Same Sex Parents"? Well, the publisher, BookLife Publishing, have made a PDF version of the book available for free.

Sure be a shame if it was shared far and wide now, wouldn't it?

@pluralistic I think of "felony contempt of business model" every time I install the CSS library (to read copy-protected DVDs) along with apps such as VLC to play DVDs on Linux :-)

Apparently, doing that to watch DVDs (which I bought new) on the wrong sort of player is naughty. Oh well.

I swear every time I pick up a little website rendering bug, it turns out to be Safari being a weird little guy and deciding to not bother with standards.

Safari's rendering engine is my Cato, lying in wait in the fridge to catch me when my guard is down.

@danderson Is it still Webkit? As I remember it, every browser on iOS has to use Webkit, making browser 'choice' sound a bit hollow to me.

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

@molly0xfff My good old daze of the Internet were pre-web, which is why I said before 1995 (when it seemed to me everyone discovered WWW and the signal:noise ratio dropped).

It was hard work then, but I always went back for more.

I had to order a 9-pin plug and solder my first modem cable, and that meant a friend dictating pin numbers on a rotary dial phone--like a savage :-)

@michael Funny. I asked about a shared server for a toy project, and someone suggested S3.

Something I worried about was the opaque charging scheme and wondering how much notice I'd get of changes and/or problems. I ended up cancelling.

@tripplehelix @revk Later standards allow negotiation between the 2 devices about which is the host, and where (and how much) power can be delivered.

It's why these days having the right cable is important for fast charging. PD allows negotiating a much higher voltage, up to 20V I know and possibly higher to allow greater power supply.

Trying to get in to a routine with the new Apple Watch.

For years I have used a Powerwatch which does not need charging, well, maybe a couple of times a year in the Winter. It uses solar and thermal, which is great.

The Apple watch lasts 3 days, but what I need to do is get in to a habit of charging at some point every day.

Not while sleeping, as use to track sleep.

But also not every 3 days, as no way to make that a "routine".

My current plan is "when I poor a whisky" 🙂

@revk My Samsung S3 Frontier goes about 3 days too, and I just plant it on the charger pod when I sit down with the first hot drink after work. It's usually up to around 80% by the time the drink is drinkable, so I put it back on again.

It doesn't matter much though, because I've got a spare charger pod and battery bank with me at work :-)

    @fbstj @davidbisset I was working on an internal date util that allowed "NWD", "LWDM", something that meant 'penultimate Thursday monthly' and also "Feb 31" as a shorthand for 2 days after 29th.

    Very handy. But during testing I found it converted "Hello, Graham" to a date. Probably not so handy...

    Turbines use wind from passing traffic to generate electricity

    Such a device can also be installed in places that are unsuitable for traditional turbines. The first such wind turbines were installed in Istanbul: they generate electricity using air turbulence created by traffic.

    The ENLIL vertical turbine was developed by Istanbul Technical University and technology firm Devecitech

    @troed @revk @Free_Press I can see possibilities both ways--there might be times when the turbines increase vehicle drag, and others when they stabilise the air enough to reduce drag.

    But overall, I expect any net gain to be mainly from ordinary wind :-)

    More stupid: went from the main menu directly to next Simpsons episode (we own every season). It asks to open in Disney. We don’t have Disney. Back one to the season menu (?!) then play again. It still thinks we don’t own it. Back repeatedly to TV Library, back into Simpsons, into the same season and episode. “Oh yeah, here it is” and plays.

    What. The. Fuck.

    After only 13 years, I am retiring my . It did a great job over all these years and I upgraded it to the max, completely disassembled several times. But it was showing its age. I just set up my new personal device, a 13 DIY Edition (AMD) by @frameworkcomputer - that's a new kind of maintenance-friendly, repairable notebook. Order, delivery, assembly, setup, migration were a blast. No issues, and the installation of @manjarolinux worked out of the box. :awesome:

    An unboxing picture: Top view on a gray couch and an open brownish cardboard box on top of it. One can see small parts of an orange and red carpet in the bottom of the picture. On top of the open lid of the box are two smaller boxes on display with Framework components: a bezel and the keyboard and touchpad unit.     My Framework (13th gen Intel) was yanked off the table by a friends dog hitting the power cable. She was horrified, but I was laughing before it hit the floor, safe in the knowledge that ALL parts are available, even if they are needed (not a mark, not even the USB-C port the cable was in was damaged).

    The only niggle with Fedora Linux was having to install Windows on a spare SSD to activate the fingerprint sensor, which has since worked fine in Fedora.

    Why is the US <Enter> so small? ;-)

    Several countries have <Enter> taller, and wider at the top.

    My UK keyboard is the same, and I'm probably too old to adapt to a smaller <Enter> and having the | \ @ ~ and # in (what I see as) the wrong places :-)

    @sarmale @mineapple The only change I'd like to see is replaceable key caps on the FW13, so I can have a penguin (Tux) instead of a 'Windows' key.

    For now I use a penguin sticker :-)
