A chance to try and get a handle on American politics, with ’s . Jonathan Freedland talks to political commentator Bill Kristal about the Presidential candidates’ second debate. Again, wasn’t present - and he’d just been found guilty by a New York court of massive fraud for years in his business dealings. Did the candidates capitalise on this news? Not a bit of it. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0s5FuzBhWbL0vDIohPF1c6?si=KypvAHRvTaqX5OU9T5O4AA

SomersetBob,

@stevesplace Thanks for your comment, Steve. I know nothing about Kristol’s background - he was chosen by Jonathan Freedland’s production team to contribute to this podcast, so it’s good to have your cautionary view of him as a reminder that people promoted in the media as knowledgeable commentators should never be taken at face value 👍

Being a who can barely fathom the political shenanigans going on in my own country these days, what’s unfolding in right now is utterly incomprehensible to me. We speak the same language, but when I hear speak on the news, they might as well be talking in Klingon. None of it makes sense 🤷‍♂️

I must say I’m blown away by #NASA’s incredible achievement in getting the #OsirisRex capsule back successfully from the #asteroid. I mean, just getting it there was difficult enough - it arrived in December 2018 after a 2-year, 2-billion km journey from Earth, stayed for 2.5 years, dropped to the surface of #Bennu in mid-2020, gathered the samples in a 10-second grab, then set off for home in May ‘21, and arrived here today a few seconds ahead of schedule. The ingenuity is mind-boggling! 1/2

SomersetBob,

The distances between Earth and , changing over the length of time of the project, and the velocities and trajectories of these stellar objects and the probe travelling through the vastness of space, had to be calculated in advance to the Nth degree there and back, over seven long years, to ensure success. Scientists are intrigued to know why it landed in the Nevada desert a minute and a half earlier than predicted! 😄 is to be heartily congratulated a grand mission accomplished 👏👏👍

SomersetBob,

@kr1st I hadn’t picked up on that parachute fact - how interesting. Presumably if it had opened on schedule, i.e a little later than it did, it would have landed even earlier! That would have perplexed the scientists even more 😄

Handy Hint from the days of computer punched cards: Take a black marker and draw a DIAGONAL line from corner to corner across the long edge of your card deck. This creates a reference that can be very helpful with cards that don't have printed sequence numbers, in the unfortunate circumstance that the deck gets dropped on the floor. Seriously.

SomersetBob,

@lauren I've never had cause to handle computer punched cards, so it took me a few moments to figure out what you meant by this. Then the penny dropped, I had a clear vision of it in my mind, and it struck me as one of the cleverest things I've ever read :)

The temperature in our garden, in the shade, at 4.50pm today. I believe this beats the highest temperature recorded in the UK this year, by .3 of a degree 😊

SomersetBob,

@TiffyBelle Yes, 30 degrees here in my little home office too - but I don't have a fan going, and my PC's fans are working overtime trying to keep things inside at a tolerable level! I prefer hot weather to cold, but will be glad when it drops back early next week to average temps again! 🙂
