Retired soldier, I spent about 30 years in the military (USMC/Army). Also recently retired computer systems engineer. So, I'm just plain retired. I need something to do so, I decided on photography and bird watching as a hobby. Unless otherwise stated, all photographs I post are my own.

I take pictures and want to share them with you, so please follow my blog.

Hazy Heights

Yesterday, this turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) flew high overhead. I guess today is high big bird day. I took this with my canon 400mm lens stacked on a 1.4X Extender. There are a lot of both turkey vultures and black vultures around, so I take photos fairly regularly. I post one now and again but discard a bunch as well.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

Feathered Mirage

This is a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) who flew high over my yard several months ago. The hawk seems to be screeching while it flies.

"The Red-tailed Hawk has a thrilling, raspy scream that sounds exactly like a raptor should sound. At least, that’s what Hollywood directors seem to think. Whenever a hawk or eagle appears onscreen, no matter what species, the shrill cry on the soundtrack is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk." - allaboutbirds.org

"Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy
Ba da da da da da da, feelin' groovy ..." - Paul Simon

There is something to be said about living in the slow lane. Take me for example, I get up early in the morning let the dogs out, then if I feel like it, I take a nap, if not I come here, into my office and write something in this blog, then take a nap. I know, it's a rough life. Every now and again, there is something pressing that requires doing. My next major engagement is Valentines Day in the week coming. I'm going to have to go to the store before Wednesday to get a card.

We've been married a while. I tell my wife, we've been married a long, long time. It's all in fun of course. I've gotten her flowers and a card every year, since were married and there's no reason to stop now. Flowers are easy because I can order them on-the-line. The card though, I have to actually get in my car and make the five-minute drive to the store.

Sorry for your loss. I know what it feels like when a best buddy dies. Its harder than many people think.

Yea, a short life is really the only thing wrong with dogs. My dog Ben is 15 years old, and I'm dreading the day when he goes away.

I took up a hobby to keep me busy, it helps, and I only have to do it when I feel like doing it.

You should tell your doctor about the anxiety, there are things doctors can do to help with that.

Hmmm ... what will I ramble on about this morning? How about car seats? Do you remember vinal car seats? They were the thing for years. I wonder if they still make vinal car seats. A fashionable car seat back in the day, was black tuck and roll vinal car seats in a souped-up car. I suppose vinal was popular because it looked like leather. I only dreamed of getting something like that done to my old cars, but they had vinal seats ... cracked vinal, but they were vinal :). That was the problem with vinal, after a while, it cracked revealing the foam stuffing. I don't want to forget the torn cloth ceiling liners in the old cars.

I'm trying to find more accounts that are committed to using alt text and only sharing things with it as well. I checked the hashtag, and that wasn't helpful. It's all tech stuff.

I don't want to be an advocate. I just want to have a good and equal experience online and chat with people who care about if their followers can participate or not.

I feel very alone in this, and because I'm not , just vision impaired, I don't seem to fit in anywhere.

Twilight at My House

Last night Charlie and I were in the backyard putting bird feeders in the shed. I turned around a saw a little color, so I pulled out my phone and took a picture. If you look carefully at the doorway, you can see a shadow at the bottom of the storm door looking out. That's Ben, waiting for me and Charlie to return.

Dune-top Drama

This little sanderling (Calidris alba) was running atop a low sand dune at Holly Beach, Louisiana.

"The Sanderling’s black legs blur as it runs back and forth on the beach, picking or probing for tiny prey in the wet sand left by receding waves. Sanderlings are medium-sized “peep” sandpipers recognizable by their pale nonbreeding plumage, black legs and bill, and obsessive wave-chasing habits. Learn this species, and you’ll have an aid in sorting out less-common shorebirds. These extreme long-distance migrants breed only on High Arctic tundra, but during the winter they live on most of the sandy beaches of the world." - allaboutbirds.org

Why does the month of February have an "r" after the "b"? Am I mispronouncing the name because I pronounce it as "Feb you air ee." I've tried to enunciate that extra "r" but it just doesn't work. I just watched a video of how to pronounce that month name and the "r" after the "b" is still silent, so why is it there to begin with? Do you think it has anything to do with ancient aliens?

"Calvin: Isn’t it strange that evolution would give us a sense of humor? When you think about it, it’s weird that we have a physiological response to absurdity. We laugh at nonsense. We like it. We think it’s funny. Don’t you think it’s odd that we appreciate absurdity? Why would we develop that way? How does it benefit us?

Hobbes: I suppose if we couldn’t laugh at things that don’t make sense, we couldn’t react to a lot of life." - Bill Watterson

Good morning. ☕️☕️🌖

My wife and I went shopping yesterday. When we got home, my PC was broken - again. 😢 I do believe it was my fault, in the army, I would maybe say that I had a case of the dumb a$$. But live and learn. If you’re curious, I just installed a new PSU. My PC is a tower I purchased a little rolling platform to set it on. Well … the platform is shorter than the base of the PC … bottom line I covered up the fan so the PSU wasn’t venting like it should. So pop goes a power supply. It’ll be a couple days before I get a new one.

In the mean time, I’m loading my photography tools on a laptop, something that I’ve been procrastinating over for a while. I have snail paced internet service so it’s slow going.

I’m doing this on my phone.

It’s time to start building a new PC.

Swede1952,

@TimWardCam

This happened several months ago, I don't remember the details, but heat is not a friend. The previous PSU ran for quite a while like that, but it eventually caused it to fail. I should have known, but for years the PSU sat at the top of the case not at the bottom, so I just wasn't thinking when I sat it up. No big deal, I dealt with the problem and since then, I've built a newer more powerful PC with a 12 core i7 processor and 64 GB of RAM.
