Continuing into a second week of sporadic but gradually increasing use of my new Linux laptop and I am just continually shocked by how staggeringly bad the experience is at every level. The new indignity is that the version of Audacity I installed from the snap store cannot play audio. This is not as bad as it could be because oddly in this case I didn't install Audacity to play audio, I installed it to visually inspect audio waveforms, but this is still pretty bad.

T045T,

@mcc you could get an MNT Reform, which lets you put in a trackball 🙃

T045T,

@mcc I’m very afraid of that third one, given I just decided to jump ship from an apple laptop :/
Hope your experience improves eventually

T045T,

@MoritzGiessmann siehe Auch: Der Spießburger (mit Dönerfleisch), der Besorgte Burger, und der Reichsburger (nur unter Vorlage des Personalausweises)

Me trying to figure out how to say "I love music" without it sounding utterly goofy, as if I am saying "I love the color blue" omg I love when air disturbances contain over a span of time many spectral components whose frequencies relate to each other by simple integer ratios

T045T,

@mcc Ren has taken four songs to articulate this SO FAR

It is getting increasingly awkward that my only daily drivers are a Win10 machine and a laptop based on antiquated MacOS. I should get a simple Linux laptop.

Last time I tried to do this though it turned out any laptops that run Linux with full hardware support out of the box are pretty expensive.

T045T,

@TomF @mcc @reedbeta reading those stories makes me believe I‘m haunted by reverse gremlins… I‘m on an iPhone SE (2020) that works fine, and a mid-2015 15“ MBP, which is also okay.

Well, except for the fact that Apple really doesn’t like you running third-party SSDs in macbooks these days, which means any OS update bricks the macbook 🙃.
But with the stock SSD it would just soldier on, I‘m certain.

People are so funny about Apple’s VR stuff.

VR will never be a mainstream thing like computers and phones are unless they make it work without the goggles or anything else your have to wear on your head.

I don’t know if that’s something that’s even solvable with anything like our current technology (project onto retinas from a tabletop device?) but even if it is—it’s at the very least decades away.

T045T,

@thomasfuchs IIRC, the devices in Snow Crash are tabletop laser-into-retina projectors.
I don’t think that is feasible, because the head tracking would need to violate the laws of causality for that to truly work without nauseating you.

Maybe very light, glasses-mounted laser projectors could work, but even that’s a stretch.

Idk which do you think is more likely for the crowd who say rolling your own engine ain't that bad

A. They're maliciously trying to lure you into a false sense of security so you'll try it and fail

Or

B. They've actually done both and think that if people were able to be less scared of rolling their own occasionally their lives might be better

Because people seem to genuinely act like it's option A. In general my life as a (videogame) coder has gotten way better as I've gotten less and less anxious about taking on new and unknown things. It turns out most things in coding aren't actually as scary and complex as you'd think once you dig into things a bit

Except quaternion math fuck that shit

T045T,

@eniko as a robot software engineer, I want to add to this in two ways:

  1. Some of my most respected colleagues came from gamedev. They have a focus on practicality, performance AND user experience that’s really rare!
  2. OTOH, I do think some of the „low level stuff is scary“ attitude might come from getting into gamedev „laterally“, rather than from a CS degree. That different background can be an advantage (all known laws of aviation etc etc) or hold one back.
T045T,

@eniko I mean, not sure how rare that is - the resources are definitely there :)
Maybe it’s just a matter of being more interested in making the game than peeking under the hood of a (hopefully working) engine?

Riot did some rebranding awhile back, and so now there is a thing where the Matrix protocol is being mainly developed by a company named Vector who develops a product named Element. Okay, fine. However, consider that this implies the existence of a hypothetical future product, service, protocol, or company named Tensor which shakes all of this up completely

T045T,

@mcc @gizmomathboy that company could have a sick spooky horseman logo too!

T045T,

@mcc alternatively, an embedded implementation of Matrix called Charlieplex

Reminder that your GDPR consent dialog has to have a one-click opt-out or it's illegal

And that "legitimate interest" is horseshit

T045T,

@drewdevault I especially love the ones that let you, the user, check or uncheck “legitimate interest” as if that wasn’t a term clearly defined in the actual GDPR 🙃

Just went to the bother of taking 12 full-screen screenshots only to discover that if you take a full-screen window screenshot with Windows 10's "Snipping Tool" it is defaced with a single-pixel fragment of the Snipping Tool UI. Every time. All these screenshots are now potentially useless. This is the thing Microsoft aggressively deprecated the old "Print Screen" tech for.

I am continually shocked that Microsoft is a real company that actually delivers the software they deliver.

T045T,

@mcc at least iOS and macOS have the decency to not actually capture the „you just took a screen shot“ overlay.
Which of course leaves you with the problem of never being able to show that UI in screen shots 🙃

Alright, soapbox time:

https://www.semianalysis.com/p/google-we-have-no-moat-and-neither

I found this article today (thanks to @quinn posting it) and... I have a lot of feelings

Firstly, it enrages me; secondly, it excites me; thirdly, it's revelatory; fourthly, it's frightening.

T045T,

@hazelweakly Just a minor thing: This is “a person who works at google” speaking, not capital-G Google.
They have >100k employees, so you’re bound to find someone with opinions like this, and the writing skills to put together a compelling document like this.

That doesn’t mean anyone who can make actual decisions has read it, let alone agrees with it.

That said, for all we know this might be Jeff Dean writing 🤷

https://alex.miller.garden/grid-world/

I like this article’s phrasing of grids as scaffolds for creative expression. It really is much less intimidating, having something to build on.

That said, coming off of A Biography of the Pixel, and having listened to @spiralganglion complain about how computers discretize more than they need to/should:
I don’t think that „[grids] are the ever-present, behind-the-scenes structure of our cities, our machines, our homes, and our lives.“

For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:

Once you've made a recording, you can slide it left or right to change its start time! 📀

Hitting a record button, watching it grow, then dragging it left and right

T045T,

@TodePond why does it grow a left-facing flap when you drag it to the left? Not like it could grow that way, or can it?

T045T,

@TodePond oh, that makes sense! but in that case, shouldn’t it also get that flap when you drag it fully outside the red dot?

anyway, I’ll put down my armchair UX designer monocle, it’s clear that this isn’t the final state of things :)

TodePond, to random

This arrow's flaps are in the wrong place. I've highlighted them red to demonstrate this.

I hope more people adopt the terminology of "flaps" for arrows by the way ➡️

Dragging around an arrow. Its flaps are slightly too far back

T045T,

@TodePond that’s a philosophical question: are the flaps in the wrong place, or is the stem too long? (Or should the end of the stem be flap-shaped? 🤔)
