Look, I respect the heck out of the technical implementation of LLMs, but let's be honest: statistically they produce average code at best and misunderstood/invalid code most often. They re-implement old bugs and obfuscate programmer intent and anyone who is leaning on them for more than a pair assist is making software harder for the rest of us.

Trying out a new website design that focuses less on talking around my (broad/generalist, often subcontracting, NDA-riddled) dev experience, and more on my increasingly significant SciComm work. Not sure if this will make me seem less technical? But I'm giving it a go.

Critique/suggestions welcome. My inner greybeard academic compels me to refuse bloated site generators, but accounting for cross-browser inconsistencies gets more complex by the year!

Every year they make a big deal about adding new words to the dictionary.

📖 “This year we add ‘bougie’ to Merriam-Webster”

What a pile of scope creep; where are the deprecations to match?

📖 “As of 2023, we no longer recognise the term ‘betwixt’. This word is to be regarded as archaic and should be regarded as improper if used in regular prose.”

We could even have some sort of voting-off ceremony à la Survivor.

Profiles are up now for #YTS2023 - a program in which STEM research students from UTAS travel around the state presenting #scicomm talks and interactive demonstrations to kids of all ages during #NatSciWeek!

Young Tassie Scientists is a hoot (last year I even got to speak at a science centre and travel to King Island!) and it’s a great way for kids to meet scientists in a casual and friendly environment. We especially like to take our Tasmanian scientists back to their roots, to show students people just like them who became #science superstars.

I'm a PhD candidate for CSIRO and contract software engineer for the University of Tasmania, where I make software that runs on big radio telescopes! They're kind of a nightmare but I'm deeply passionate about space conservation and the complicated infrastructure needed to make it happen.
