So how would one prepare a consulting business for the wave of businesses realizing they need someone to fix their incomprehensible unmaintainable AI-damaged code in about a year?

Zee,
@Zee@social.coop avatar

@vaurora

I seem to recall Michael Feathers mentioning that the best and worst thing for his career was writing "Working Effectively with Legacy Code" as

  1. He had consistent work, since unmaintainable code is everywhere, but...
  2. He was always working with legacy code

So perhaps a modernized book / zine series / ??? on "Repairing Systems"?

In my worker-owned future; all job postings include how many hours applicants at the bottom of the pay scale would need to work in order to:

  • Buy a sandwich or similar lunch-time food from vendors within a 15m walking distance of the work location
  • Pay the mortgage for the median home sale-price within 30m of the work location
  • Pay rent for the median home rental price within 30m of the work location

Hoo boy. I'm not naming names because I don't want to fan the flames, but the knives are out:

Events around have rightly emboldened volunteer-driven open source projects to take their hyper-wealthy downstream users to task.

Wild to think that many large companies have hollowed out their open source program offices (OSPOs), the internal teams who have been working on addressing these resource issues.

I fear this will get worse before it gets better.

@mekkaokereke I moved to CA 10 years ago; and the last two years Jan/Feb feels almost like monsoon-season.

Here's to hoping it at least mitigates the fires and droughts...

Attempting to regulate these 3 Internets as if they are the same is ultimately futile.

I agree with this take; amplification + commentary is a critical part of asynchronous large-group conversation.

Not supporting it directly is a bit of a womp-womp.

Please recommend me a relatively inexpensive conversion-funnel observation as a service ?

We:

  • Don't want to host it ourselves
  • Don't want to leak user data to Google etc.
  • Don't need the Heft of Segment/Mixpanel etc.

FYI, has a Journal feature that is on a trajectory to provide like functionality on your own domain,.

But instead of being ran by people who wring their hands about deplatforming Nazi's; it's product design and engineering, customer support, and hosting are provided by worker and community owned data .

HMU if you want to give it a whirl!

Hosting starts at $60/yr for personal and community sites; or $250/yr for organizations.

I imagine there is an program for electronics redistribution and/or repair? A librarian friends personal laptop is a netbook that’s experiencing some intermittent hardware issues around the WiFi, and I no longer am confident / enthused in my own diagnostics and repair skills; and spoons are sparse.

Went to the SF Ruby Meetup today. It's been a while since I've gone to an industry meetup.

It was nice. We had pot stickers. And Ramen.

People shared computery things they care about.

Probably the most time I've actively thought about the more computer-ward side of programming in 5 years.

Zee,
@Zee@social.coop avatar

The problem that has been occupying my time lately has been "how do we run software companies in a consent-forward, agency-nurturing way?"

And I don't really know how to find or attend or organize a meetup about that.

The way tech interviews is kind of a reveal on the ways tech is unwell.

Specifically, the typical estimate of talent is whether or not someone fits or does not fit a particular preconception.

It's dressed up with all this elaborate ritual, but what it comes down to in practice is:

  • you walk in
  • they watch you move
  • they decide if they want to take a risk based on how well your motion conforms to their preconception of talent

and crucially, what makes this so artificial:

secret ballot

Zee,
@Zee@social.coop avatar

@danilo This is the process recommended in thinking fast and slow.

Assess for 2~3 particular skills, sign post which one you are assessing at any given time. Once you are done assessing Skill 1, move on to skill 2.

As a Child of the 90/00s Internet; the current model for building and maintaining digital relationships is... Well...

Shite.

As a teenager, I was a member of a community of thousands of nerds who loved pushing computing hardware to its limits across several websites.

Two had private sections where hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of computing equipment was swapped, bought, and sold; with little fraud and "drama".

How can we design the make healthy relating the norm?
