I was digging into the AGWG discussion that moved Focus Appearance to AAA (https://www.w3.org/2023/03/21-ag-minutes.html#t02) and found this deck from Google researchers that explored different styles:

@yatil Indeed, many of the surveys are closed to the rabble like me (I let my account lapse).

There was an problem with display: contents. Is that still an issue, or has it been resolved?

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@yatil @ppk
That is indeed the solution, sadly.

Essentially display: contents will rob the semantics of any element.

Do not use it for anything interactive or where you need to be certain its semantics are conveyed.

If you use it on elements with no semantics then you may be fine, but test it regardless.

@aardrian Not sure if you've seen this step in accessiBe's "appology tour" yet.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@ppatel Meh. Tech bro with anger problems who is driven primarily by money posts a mea culpa in hidden corner of a constituency site and sacrifices marketing teams in token launch of rehabilitation tour after years of poor behavior. Sure.

Right, Hingson asserted that because I am not blind I have no standing to speak on the broken product.

@simon @FreakyFwoof @devinprater @ppatel
Ad blockers have been doing a heavy lift. I missed the UserWay overlay on the Special Olympics site because Ghostery blocked it with no effort on my part.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@simon @FreakyFwoof @devinprater @ppatel
Lulz. A chat modal over their video modal never mind the overlay. Wow.

@arush
Not recently, no. March 2021 on the Mosen podcast:

@arush
It sticks with me because it diminishes all the other disability types the overlay harms while also asserting I am speaking on behalf of an entire community of which I am not a member.

Intended to “other” me and anyone else who has valid feedback but is not blind.

How the heck does a screen reader user write a screech on this platform?

The screech button is hidden, most of the others are unlabeled.

It’s as if nobody paid any attention to the tiniest accessibility gains on their previous mess.

Swiping through the BlueSky interface on Android with TalkBack running (an Android bug prevents audio recording). The order in which controls receive focus does not match the visual. Many controls are unlabeled. The button to write a new post never gets focus, as if it does not exist.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@patrick_h_lauke Signal of who to block.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

BlueSky can’t even claim it’s an MVP; it’s a live platform onboarding users by generating fake scarcity via invites.

As long as it knowingly (and it does know) excludes people, it is mostly a monument to the ableism of tech hype grift.
https://adrianroselli.com/2022/11/accessibility-gaps-in-mvps.html

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

Any claims that BlueSky is open or federated are crap. It seems like an effort to cram crypto into a bespoke protocol that feels familiar enough to lure users while building the ad platform it is meant to be.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@objectinspace So every update risks a regression? Does that apply to security? Performance? What else?

Rhetorical, I know, but if moving fast means racking up technical debt on solved problems then the platform sounds unsustainable with current approach.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@objectinspace I think you are right. After all, we are not the customer.

aardrian,
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

@simon It took me years to put it into words.

TalkBack running, I triggered the unlabeled ellipsis menu and got no confirmation other than seeing it open.

Knowing I did not want it I tried to close it.

The page instead darkened in shame with every effort to close the menu.

BlueSky on the profile page, I swipe past the ‘Edit profile’ button to the ‘Option 1 options’ button and double-tap. Visually it expands but there is no announcement. I continue to double-tap and the only thing that happens is the screen gets darker with every tap. All the way to black.

This:

<td aria-label="My cow">
 <img src="cow.gif">
</td>

Is not the same as this:

<td>
 <img src="cow.gif" alt="My cow">
</td>

A quick test with a screen reader or an automated checker would tell you this.

Proposed SC 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum) now uses a circle in its spacing exception.

So I updated my 24×24 cursor bookmarklet to use a circle instead:
