I get super weirdly giddy when my feedback (a toot in this case) gets read out on a podcast.

admin,

@popey Assuming you were referring to ATP, I think your mention was in the segment on the “state of podcasting”. It would be nice if @linuxmatters used chapter markers. The format of the podcast easily fits chapters. I could then more easily skip the NixOS segments 😁

Wondering if a user of @overcastfm might help. The app won’t open on iPhone or iPad (even a brand new installation on new hardware) - it just opens with an activity notification and goes round and round. I’m a very occasional user of it, and I wonder if it got confused with a very old account. How can I reset it, so it will start me fresh with a new user account? Are there hidden files in iCloud or something? A bit of an iOS newbie.

BrewDog have written to their workers telling them that they will no longer be paid the real living wage from April with the rate being removed for new starts with immediate effect.

The hypocrisy of as a company never ceases to amaze me. At least there are still plenty of decent independent and craft brewers in the UK to choose from!

Is it possible to run a Mastodon instance on my Pi and be the only member if it AND be federated?

admin,

@staringatclouds @thejessiekirk Its reasonably straight forward to run your own personal instance from a I’ve had this instance running now for ~8 months
Federation can initially be a bit of a battle, you can move over all your followers, using some will also help. I also have a second account on the server that follows more accounts to help pull in content. Also look at something like
I would definitely recommend running your own instance, it gives you the independence to run it how you want. Once setup its not much ongoing effort and the hardware can handle it. Also you don’t need a particularly high speed internet connection. If are still thinking of going ahead , I’m happy to answer questions or point you at the guides I used.

admin,

@panda @staringatclouds @thejessiekirk Totally agree on backups, I’ve always felt more comfortable running production systems on a SSD. If you use relays and federate widely it can use quite a lot of data, even with deleting old posts after 2 weeks, my total disk space typically hovers around 300GB

SteamPumkin, to RaspberryPi

I've been thinking about getting a #RaspberryPi4 for ages but decided to hold out for a #RaspberryPi5 instead. I had a whole plan for what case and SSD to buy etc. but now that the #Pi5 is around the corner, it looks like most of the stuff I would've gotten isn't compatible with the new board.

Can anyone more experienced in the #Pi world give me a general idea of how long I'll be waiting before things like the #ArgonOne case get a Pi5 variant?

@Raspberry_Pi

#RaspberryPi #Technology #SBC

admin,

@SteamPumkin @Raspberry_Pi It might we worth keeping an eye on Kickstarter, Argon initially launched the EON and ONE cases there. To get myself started I’ve just pre-order the 5 with the £5 “Active Cooler for Raspberry Pi 5”. With the improved USB3 performance you can initially attach SSD through USB3. I might then move to a neater “one box” setup when I see what cases become available. This should also minimise wasting too much cash

question:

I run a single-user instance which seems to have become very lagged. If I delete everything from the "pull" queue, is that a reasonably safe action to take?

For obvious reasons I may not see your replies for a good 45-50 minutes!

admin,

@losttourist Intermittently I would have the same problem, usually when some large event/drama occurred. Running my instance off a and I use ~8 relays with ~6 fedi.buzz relays, and had sidekiq setup with the default config.

Had lots of advice around cutting relay use, upping queue concurrency or splitting queues. Splitting queues seemed a little daunting so tried all the other options first. It wasn’t until I split sidekiq into 3 seperate queues that I had a lasting solution. Each queue has a concurrency of 8 or 10 and restart each every 6 hours.

Memory use is now better than the single queue and I’ve never had any delay on the queues. Daily peak for sidekiq was over 600K without issue. I even tried to break it following the AppleEvent hashtag but couldn’t create a backlog. Splitting the queues is much easier than the impression you get from some of the online guides, so it might be worth giving it a try.

Any idea why tootctl search deploy crashes in part Importing InstancesIndex 2700/6715551 to:

PG::UndefinedColumn: ERROR: column "id" does not exist (ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid)
LINE 1: SELECT "id" FROM "instances" WHERE "instances"."id" IN...

I can index statuses and accounts normally (and frankly that's all I need atm), but I'd like to know the reason to this. Any ideas? Full output: https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8#issuecomment-1656690565

My classic iPhone series is coming on nicely:

Twitterrific, Reeder, PCalc, Fantastical, Bloom, NetNewsWire, Carrot Weather, Instapaper, iA Writer, Streaks, Pixelmator, Infuse, Retrospecs, Eucalyptus, Things, Soulver.

Mulling over what I can add to this growing collection. Any thoughts would be welcome. (And crossed fingers for a few Q&As and interview requests I already have in the wild.) https://www.tapsmart.com/tag/classics/

My #RaspberryPi mastodon server seems to be struggling with the uptick in #Fediverse activity. The sidekiq pull queue is sitting with 13 hour delay. The other queues have no real delays.

I’ve used multiple relay to increase federation. Now my server is sitting at 9000 connections, would reducing the number of relays help?

There are multiple guides to increasing the number of sidekiq processes, many are aimed at larger servers others contradictory. Can anyone point me at a guide for a single user server. Is there anything else I should consider?

admin,

@moira @notroot I was never sure if block lists added or reduced server overhead. I added smallest fedinuke list a couple of weeks ago. I will increase this, I hadn’t appreciated these other benefits. Just thought that as I didn’t see hardly any problematic content, I didn’t need to do much about it.

admin,

@moira @notroot It was one of those things I new I should be doing, then I found #Fediblockhole to automate the updating of the block lists. This added sufficient delay to ensure I never quite started it. Anyway have manually increased blocklist and will automate it later.

Related to my last toot, if anyone is aware of a piece of (ideally free if not cheap) software that enables me to design e-mails with mail merges and send them via a specific SMTP / mail server config I'd love you long time!

admin,

@wild1145 Mailjet might do what your after, the free tier allows sending emails from custom domain and there’s a range of online design tools. It’s the budget arm of Mailgun

How many rebuilds exist of Linux distributions other than Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

How many people make rebuilds available of the subscription-only Ubuntu packages with security fixes?

How many other distributions develop so completely in the open as Red Hat does with the gitlab repos?

Context matters, IMHO.

admin,

@jwildeboer I totally dont understand the position when compared to , and their flavours and derivatives. OK there is some of the friction with snaps etc on Ubuntu related projects, but RHEL seems to have developed a Reddit like level of PR awareness

With the Prigozhin mutiny in the rearview mirror, I’ve happily axed this. In the future, I’ll try to share YouTube links or something, because Twitter’s 2:20 cap on free video uploads ain’t enough.

admin,

@kevinrothrock Any chance to give a more equal emphasis on as a platform, rather than it just being a link to twitter? It would also be great to access the videos content from a source rather than just Youtube

@swifteh @estebanz01 @homeassistant You might want to give the” Ubiquiti WiFiman” app a try. You still get metrics for non Ubiquiti Wi-Fi access points. I think the only wifi the capability you loose is the ability to generate floor plan mappings.

There was a lot of noise about back in March after they were bought but I decided to wait and see what happens rather than panic moving. Today's pricing updates makes me seriously consider actually moving.

What domain registrars (and hosts) do people recommend? (Caveat: no Cloudflare recommendations and I'm skeptical of Route 53 because of surprise bills.)

GPX import is now supported in Organic Maps!

You don't need to convert your GPX tracks into KML anymore. Import them directly into Organic Maps!

Check the full list of changes in this release on our website:

https://organicmaps.app/news/2023-06-07/gpx-import-is-now-supported-in-organic-maps/

And install Organic Maps using this short link: https://omaps.app/get

admin,

@organicmaps Had used maps.me years ago, but I hadnt heard of Organic Maps until I saw a post here last week.

Used organic maps for the first time at the weekend, the app works so well. With the ability to import any GPX walk directly from sites such as walkhighlands, no data connection needed as all maps are stored on phone, and no subscription required

Afraid its goodbye to the Ordanance Survey app

admin,

@peeteepee @organicmaps Yes, in the UK its basically the difference of data compared to the Ordanance Survey data.

I have subscribed to the OS app in the past but with my level of use, rather than the annual £28 subscription, I tended to just subscribe for a month when needed. The OS topographical premium layer available to subscribers is more detailed than and can be worthwhile.

On IOS the app was very responsive and the battery draw was good. The UK is covered by 18 downloadable maps so its easy to have the areas need on your phone. This is no longer available with the OS free tier.

Couple of other things comparing OM to OS app free tier. The OS app tracks progress on a walking route and gives an ETA. However OM lets you track and save a route taken. Also I generally preferred how the data was presented in the OM app at different magnification levels.

Privacy with OM is also better and a safe choice compared to the multitude of other apps.
