@markwyner I know I buy red mostly because I find it the most versatile. But yellow is my favourite raw in a salad.

I really want to know how Appleโ€™s Live Voicemail works. It requires carrier integration. So the phone isnโ€™t handling the call, but is it transcribed by the phone? I need to know and no one knows. Haha.

beno,
@beno@aus.social avatar

@dgar @bastardsheep it is not surprising at all that the carriers implemented a thing for a specific phone brand. In the US the iPhone is just shy of 50% market share and about 80% if teens have one. So not one does half the mobile phone population in the states have an iPhone but the young ones you want to get hooked is even more.

Optus does not support visual voicemail.

At the moment it is only a US feature. I am curious on what it involves and where the transcribing actually happens.

Iโ€™m having a very annoying chat with someone at work right now. They have been a huge pain during this project. They are trying to explain why they want to cut corners. This is what just happened.

Colleague: Can we have a call? I want you to understand.
Me: Not right now.
C: Why?
Me: Not now.
C: I donโ€™t understand.
Me: You donโ€™t need to know why I am not going to take a call right now.
C: Why, though?
Me: BECAUSE if we have a call right now I will not be happy and we will just have a bad talk and frankly I donโ€™t want to raise my voice this morning.
C: Ohโ€ฆ.

Thanks for all the suggestions to fix my issues on macOS. A few remarks:

  • the option to always keep the menu bar visible in fullscreen wasnโ€™t where people told me it was. I eventually found it in โ€œmissions controlโ€ for some reason.
  • Three fingers drag to move a window is awesome, why is it not in the main touchpad settings?
  • The โ€œmoveโ€ shortcut is the stupidest thing. Just use the command X feature that is IN THE MENU (why have it here if itโ€™s greyed out all the time??)

@thelinuxEXP I find it interesting finder wasnโ€™t showing copy and paste enabled on your files. It could be a bug as youโ€™re using a beta macOS. My finder shows copy and paste enabled.

With the recent moves from , , and even , I think itโ€™s becoming clear that ads are not a sustainable business model in the long run (and yes, I know I run a YouTube channel funded by ads ๐Ÿ˜…)

I took a look at a few examples, at how this decline is also making the web worse for everyone, at alternative platforms, and tried to imagine what an internet without ads to fund content creation and big platforms could look like:

beno,
@beno@aus.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP this is a really good video on the state of things! Iโ€™m definitely sharing it around. I know plenty of people who donโ€™t understand ads pay for things on the โ€œfreeโ€ internet.

I really donโ€™t mind paying for things in a subscription model for the stuff I rely on. Though Iโ€™ve come to find that some content creators want to charge A$10+ a month for their content, which I get but I canโ€™t afford to do that for all my creators I follow the currently do it. It is hard to want to support people but also have (most) everyone asking for $10 or more a month.

Earlier in the year I had made the comment that I was going to try to move my desktop from Windows to Linux. I have done research and playing with distros since then.

I knew most the games I play would work fine on Steamโ€™s Proton or via other means. I am okay with that bit of work. I also wanted to keep Windows 11 installed on the machine to be able to play the games that wonโ€™t work in Linux.

I never went fully over as I have learned a lot of random things and have broken some things as well a few times. Luckily I have three internal drives ๐Ÿ˜‰

The biggest issue with the change over is definitely the fact that I have an Nvidia card and also want to keep Secure Boot enabled for Windows.

Really the best distro I found for this was Ubuntu, mostly because it is very automatic with this process. Fedora was (still is) my top pick, but it has been hard to manage with Nvidia and secure boot. I tried Arch based distros but secure boot just gets messy there.

Iโ€™m getting closer to figuring out what I will do officially with this, but I also need to learn to be okay with some things not always being the most up to date. Generally my hardware is older so kernel updates should not really affect me as much anymore.

It is a bit of a process, that I have definitely over complicated a bit on my end, but I think it is fun and worth the learning and experimenting!

@nickster Nostalgia mostly.
I did all my CS degree on Fedora.

It's interesting reading comments of the Hyundai brake light issue.

A lot of people seem to think "this isn't a big deal" but, once again, their reason is that "you should just be paying attention"

Why is it so damn hard to get people to realize that OTHER DRIVERS ARE NOT YOU and that YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW WELL THEY MIGHT BE PAYING ATTENTION?

beno,
@beno@aus.social avatar

@TechConnectify in my experience those people who say โ€œyou should just pay attentionโ€ are the ones where I fear for my life when they drive.

By popular demand, I took a look at , the gaming focused derivative of .

I compared the default experience, various ease of use tweaks, controller support, gaming performance, and highlighted the major differences, after installing both distros on the same device.

So, is Nobara truly better than Fedora for gaming? Letโ€™s see!

beno,
@beno@aus.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP thanks for doing this! I was always interested if I was missing out on anything. I havenโ€™t gotten a successful install of Nobara to give it a go. It either shows a black screen with a blinking cursor after install. Or I am able to drop into the DE but my machine is very slow with the CPU usage sitting at over 90% constantly.
