🤩 Exciting announcement: #Favorite#projects are (almost) here! With our release of OpenProject 14.1 next week, users will be able to add projects to their ⭐ favorites.
Today's topic.... #movies
Only in second place in the last vote
But we all love movies, don't we?
_____ 🎥🍿🎬
Post your favorite movie
One that you have seen many times
That you like to watch again and again
Or just a movie that holds a special place in your heart for some reason
______ 📽️🎞️🍿
Perhaps on #Mastodon, the word “favorite” makes us shy away from giving each other a ⭐️? It was like that on twitter before they changed it to “like” ❤️.
Anyway, I give ⭐️s to express a few sentiments: to say I like what you shared, to thank you for a kind reply to my posts, to agree, or to let you know you’re heard. Hopefully, it spreads some good feelings all around. You’re all awesome! 🫶💕⭐️✨
Don't come to tell us you hate all holidays. I know they can be tough, but what you probably don't like is toxic people attached to them. Either way yucking someone's yum is not nice, so don't.
@jay_chi@RT_Alt@RickiTarr Which is my 2nd #favorite. We have started having all the transplants from the frozen north and folks without fam we know here for a ridiculous amount of food. And yeah, the leftovers the next day are always amazing.
I'd like the #favorite button on #Mastodon to have a name like "I'm seeing you" or something more neutral. Maybe something like "noted."
I pause when someone posts something disastrous, and then I end up favoring their post. I favor it because I have nothing else to say, and I'm trying to not boost everything.
It feels like this:
"My house burned down! 😭"
"👍"
Hmm... I guess ultimately, #reactions like on #Discord would be better. (Yes, I know Firefish has them.)
Can anyone with extensive knowledge of #activitypub explain how interactions between #lemmy and #mastodon work? For instance, does #boost and #favorite do anything for the Lemmy side of things? And how do I post to Lemmy from mastodon with decent format?(if possible)
🥥 New to the #Fediverse?
1 ) Welcome.
2 ) We have no #ads and no #algorithms, but we have skillz.
3 ) If you #favorite a post, you're telling the author that you liked it.
4 ) If you #boost a post, you're helping its author get seen by a wider audience on more instances.
5 ) Choose wisely, Grasshopper! 🥥
If you don’t feel like you want to Repost a post that got your attention, I think it’s pretty important in the #Fediverse to hit the Favorite button anyway. Unlike on platforms that offer engagement metrics to posters, here your #Repost, #Favorite, and replies are the only signal that post creators get that anyone read their posts at all.
When I started on Mastodon, people would advise me to “only Boost posts.” Since there’s no algorithm that places a value on Favorites, “only Boosts have value.”
I disagree completely.
When people Favorite my posts, they unwittingly introduce themselves to me. I have discovered some very interesting people that I may not have if they didn’t Favorite my posts.
For people new to the fediverse/mastodon: there are some strong customs and strong personalities. I can make a few important quality of life recommendations to give you a more pleasant experience:
In your account settings, go to filters and add a filter to block the following words:
Nazi
Fash
Fascism
Fascist
Twitter
Reddit
Elon
Musk
Defederate
Fediblock
There’s a lot of name-calling and protracted and unproductive discussions using these words. Certainly it’s up to you, but this is my recommendation.
We strongly encourage you to add alt text to any images you post, and if for some reason you do not, you’ll likely be met with many replies all reminding you, with varying levels of intensity, that you forgot. I recommend blocking any account who is rude about it.
Some times you may post something important to you that causes others to be uncomfortable without a content warning. Similarly, you can expect replies of varying politeness asking you to “add a CW”. Things that are patently offensive or not safe for work definitely should have a content warning for obvious reasons, but other than that, use your discretion. Again, I recommend simply blocking people who are too aggressive in their replies related to CWs.
Follow your instance’s rules.
You will rightly be bounced for expressing hate, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or unwanted harassment. There is no place for that - don’t do it here. I can’t tell you what to think, but if you want to post hateful or harassing content, you should find another platform somewhere else. It isn’t hard to be kind. Or at least not an ass.
The fediverse is all about delegating control to instances and end users. We have many tools available, like muting and blocking accounts, and blocking entire instances, as well as muting conversations. These are very useful to have a good time on the fedi.
@bhawthorne
...and many of my contacts use "#favorite just to simply show that they have read your post.--This is an interactive place...and post might not get transmitted for longer periods, in particular, when we have #TwitterMigration waves.
Born, raised, lived in California over 50 years. I am leftist politically, Vegan because I feel it is wrong for me to exist by the harming of other sentient beings (positive side effect, a smaller carbon & water footprint). I am demisexual & dislike sexual references I filter NSFW, Kink & Lewd + (if I understand them). I read a lot & play board & table top roleplaying games. I am ASD, physical & mental health issues. Apatheist/Taoist, cPTSD
Added: I do not identify as transgender because in my life my gender has never changed, only my sex has changed. I was a girl when I was little and became a woman upon turning 18. I was forced to pretend to be male by society but I never have been.
“The roots of sexism and homophobia are found in the same economic and political institutions that serve as the foundation of racism in this country and, more often than not, the same extremist circles that inflict violence on people of color are responsible for the eruptions of violence inspired by sexist and homophobic biases. Our political activism must clearly manifest our understanding of these connections.” ― Angela Y. Davis
