It is now at the stage that selling zero [Faikin] in a day is an anomaly...

@revk I'm tempted to get a Daikin heatpump just so I can use your Faikin device :-)

Remember the EU proposal that would have Europol keep a registry of everyone with photos flagged as potential child sexual abuse material? Even false positives? They appear to have lost track of some very personal data: https://www.politico.eu/article/europol-internal-agency-eu-police-agency-engulfed-in-clean-up-over-missing-files/

Still working on simplomon, the availability/performance monitoring solution you can launch with a 3 line config. Although it is simple to use, it boasts powerful features, like measuring HTTPs performance through explicitly configured nameservers (native, google, quad9 etc) & different source addresses.

So Americans go crazy that the EU enacts thoughtful legislation full of procedures to reign in dominant social media players. EU bad! And this week US comes out with a law that simply bans TikTok if it is still Chinese owned 180 days from now. https://www.npr.org/2024/03/06/1236363592/biden-tiktok-ban

An official announcement from the Dutch government: "The Netherlands hosts some of the world's largest internet exchanges. This obliges us to make the best use of these exchanges for our national security. With the Temporary Cyber Act, we will make optimum use of the data carried on our cables to protect The Netherlands against Russian and Chinese hackers" -> background in English https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/dutch-intelligence-and-security-law/

Re previous post, if you've ever pined for a specific test that your monitoring platform can't do out of the box, please let me know! I'm looking for things that may currently be "possible to build but hard to do yet high value" and turn that into a single line test. Like the DNS SOA sync test that is already in there -> https://github.com/berthubert/simplomon?tab=readme-ov-file#simplomon

Here is something that I know people will appreciate: RRSIG DNSSEC freshness checks. Oneliner.

@jpmens working on it but wondering why anyone would really need a regex and not just a string match. Any suggested usecase? It is easy enough to add but people might also mess it up.

Here's one I missed sorely in other platforms, check a URL (and certs) on a specific IP address:

@janl I might be confused but doesn’t the read me start with “Very simple monitoring system with a single configuration file and a single binary”? Can you suggest a better text?

@janl all these things are actually in the read me.

How important are bicycles to The Netherlands? For one, the average Dutch person owns more than one. But also, if you want to tell someone you understand the context of what they are saying, you can state "Ah on that bicycle". https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/op_die_fiets (photo by Daria Nepriakhina 🇺🇦)

@jpmens they mean it. They have very specific requirements. Like not smiling no glasses position of eyes etc. All for facial recognition purposes.

New post, inspired by both Dutch parliaments giving up on hosting email & moving to the Microsoft cloud. Organizations often dither for years over decisions like these, causing massive frustration for staff & users. Here I write some reasonably obvious words on how to pick what to keep in-house, and what to then quickly get rid of. And vitally, how to treat staff so things end well:

Has anyone yet found a self-hosted way to translate Markdown from one language to another? Mixtral LLM delivers excellent language, but turns x into (<x>) somehow. So my goal is that I can take Markdown in Dutch and locally (in my computer) convert that to Markdown in English. Or vice versa. Thank you!

We often talk about European clouds & their lack of success. Today, think tank Clingendael released a report commissioned by Dutch intelligence/security service AIVD called "Too late to act? Europe’s quest for cloud sovereignty". It references my recent "IKEA Cloud" post. Much recommended: https://www.clingendael.org/sites/default/files/2024-02/Policy_brief_Cloud_sovereignty.pdf

@revk lots of people should have their programming or even keyboard privileges revoked. So many programmers have no idea what they are doing. But they continue to do it.
