  • When a business is acquired in order to be resold, after being stripped down for parts, capital gains are influenced by the initial purchase price in addition to the final resulting value, to discincentivize buy-layoff/sellassets-sell

  • Unemployment revenue must cover the cost of a reasonable home -- if you're forced to move, and the market in your city is charging 2500-3000/mo rents, unemployment covers this+food/utilities

@polarity art/culture grants, where possible, seems pretty good when they're available. live performances (+/- merch sales, if it makes sense), film/tv/videogame licensed works, all probably adds up to a lot more than anything streaming provides ._>

@johnefrancis I'm with you on all that -- what I'm not with is the messaging about it. most voters are filling gas tanks, maybe theyve got a nat gas furnace or fireplace, if theyre lucky enough to be home owners. Maybe the poorest canadians who depend on it for their livelihood to make it to the next paycheck could be upset, but they were let down by neoliberalism way before the carbon tax increase was a thing :(

@johnefrancis nah politically they are doing the best they can, but news media needs to make clear to most canadians who is really paying it, and why they are paying it (to incentivize moving towards renewables and reduced use). Scaring grandpa about an extra 3c a litre isnt helping imho
