I was hoping I could pitch my solar storm decks more now. But because nothing big happened (yet), the truth is I can’t. And because Starlink will now re-enter all the time, it’s impossible to know what is a failure and what is planned. The only big thing that happened was that SWPC (USA) has proven itself to be mostly useless. But I kinda knew that already from talking to them. I will now be using SpaceWeatherLive (Europe) only. Adios SWPC!

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets thank you for doing this! But yikes, read some of the space company letters and they’re all like, “please don’t implement any new debris or environmental regulations so we can continue to do whatever we want without taking any responsibility whatsoever!” Wow, just wow.

“Starlink precipitation” should not be allowable as a term - I’m sorry, what?!

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@panamared27401 I agree 100% but no one wants to be the terror that says that lol. I will do it if no one else does. I spent tons of time researching why there is no model for megaconstellations & a Carrington event. There isn’t one bc it’s too scary.

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@feld @skobkin I think it’s a threat to public safety. There is an article that says "One human injury or death on Earth’s surface (from space debris) can be expected every 10 years." https://aerospaceamerica.aiaa.org/features/dodging-debris/

That’s in normal conditions. We just got un-normal with the new giant sunspot

Starlink just launched another batch of satellites during a G4 Geomag Watch?? Unbelievable. They have no idea what they are doing. Waiting for the NOAA Severe Storm press release with angst.

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@phryk haha, I unplugged most big stuff in my apt. We survived CME 1 but I expect that. Waiting for the next ones is going to be really hard

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets driving to Toronto from Saskatchewan? NOAA/SWPC implied in the briefing not to go anywhere - stay safe! I can’t believe how many times they said they don’t know what will happen

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets wow! Any guidance on getting paid to interview? Do you have to get a science agent for that?

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets I thought Carl Sagan had an agent that got him paid for every interview right? So you should get that! It’s a lot of energy to interview for me, I don’t know what to do going forward with it

I’m on The Guardian this morning!! I’m so proud of this piece. A lot of comments agreeing with me and disagreeing with me and I welcome it all - I’m just so glad that we are starting to think about how turning our ionosphere into a trash bin isn’t the brightest idea for a so-called intelligent species https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/16/dead-satellite-space-earth-magnetic-field

How might one start an academic institution? Could it be a start-up pitch? Something needs to change. The smartest scientists in the world shouldn’t be leaving academia in droves. We need a route in academia that doesn’t force endless meaningless publications & “mainstream” research. We need a route that actually pursues innovation and discovery. I’d call it “The Science or Perish Institute.”

At least these are my 7am pre-coffee thoughts. Have any VCs hit Mastodon yet?

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@koen_hufkens @jens what do you think is the current VC mindset in academia? To me, not enough start-ups come from academia, so instead pseudoscience & pseudotech gets funding from founders & VCs with little education or background in the particular technology. And that’s why we are in this mess - pseudotech running half the world

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@jens ok fine. “The Science or Perish University” ;) do you think “institute” has become too vague? I mostly would want a community esp for PhD or post-doc level where we could pursue more multidisciplinary science. I have a lot I could publish on, but it doesn’t particularly have to do with my paid university work - so do I just work/publish without a university & without funding? There are no grants or funding sources that fit the topics

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@jens mostly topics related to space weather + the interaction with other fields of study. That’s too multidisciplinary for academia. Plus satellite pollution which no one will fund bc space is soon going to be controlling capitalism. There’s no funding for any of that anywhere as far as I know. Applying to grants when your topic is outside the grant funding topics & thus faces likely rejection is not worth the immense energy to apply

carlysagan, to random
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

I almost cried watching this bc it encapsulates everything I’m dealing with in academia. The h-index needs to be ended. It means nothing anymore. Everyone knows senior researchers are putting their names on publications in which they have contributed absolutely nothing. The smartest women in the world shouldn’t have to resort to youtube entertainment to survive. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LKiBlGDfRU8

Today I need to read an entire master's thesis (well, half of it, I'm part way through) and come up with thesis defense questions, figure out what to teach in my last astrobiology lecture (since this semester is apparently a week longer than last semester wtf?), make up the final quizzes for my astro 101 class, and maybe finish that damn referee response.

Oh, and write to my stupid, useless MLAs yet again to ask them to actually talk to the teachers' union https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/sask-teachers-job-action-work-to-rule-1.7166366

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets I was going to email you today but saw this & held back:) but have been wondering - if an asteroid the size/mass/velocity of Starlink was headed to Earth, it would activate planetary defense monitoring, right?

oh nooooooo I just realized my paper with @hannorein is going to come out on the arxiv on April Fool's day and it's not a joke! And all because the moderator held on to it for 1 day. ARG.

HIlariously, I had another paper years ago that was published on April Fool's Day on accident and it also was not a joke. Maybe that means I can publish 2 joke papers on any day I want to?

carlysagan, (edited )
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets has anyone posted an “april fools” science paper on arxiv though? Haha. I guess the next question from this is -
I always liked observing sunspots - I wonder if sats could be so comparable in size that it would interfere or confuse sunspot observing? Not possible, too much light & reflection?

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets so glad to hear about the sunspots, thank you! But I’m sad people are abusing the arxiv, the settings and process are way too involved for people to be posting jokes! Those people have too much time on their hands lol

So cool to get to chat with the amazing astrophysicist @sundogplanets today! I’m not sure if I feel better or worse about satellites taking over the entire planet but at least some of us are doing what we can to raise awareness. If you care anything at all about the night sky or the health of our planet, don’t buy satellite or Starlink internet!

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets thank you so much for talking! Really interesting and really helpful. Hope we can build more interest/momentum against this sat-take-over!

I’m listening to the Eln - Don Lemon shtshow & I cannot believe El*n is going on and on and on about how “DEI lowers the standards of professionals.” Let me correct that - having all-white-men run every single thing in the world lowers our potential as a species.

carlysagan, to random
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. “The biggest flying object ever made” blowing up in the atmosphere is not a “success.” It’s an environmental disaster. This is the sane take and the entire space industry is insane for surrounding our pale blue dot with trash.

carlysagan, to random

Oh crap! A male journalist painted me as a total blonde bimbo without passing it by me. Not like I’m the only female plasma physicist in every room and not like I’m struggling to deal with rent raises or anything, I’m totally secure in my work and can be brushed off as an idiot! Capitalism has reached the magnetosphere, there’s no doubt about it. Go ahead and brush it off!

carlysagan,
@carlysagan@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets yeah, the front of Live Science. And just love the critiques of “there’s no way there’ll be this many sats” and this is “too simple.” Um, ok? What do I do with this? I asked him to remove the I’m-a-total-dumb-blonde-and-have-no-idea-what-I’m-talking-about line and he did thankfully. But major ugh!
