The last time I was in England for any length of time was almost 20 years ago (how am I even old enough for that to be the case???). I remember that I made tacos for the family I was staying with (I was obsessed even then) and finding the ingredients for it was quite hard - I had to make a lot of replacements. Now there are Mexican and Thai and even bubble tea places in tiny little seaside towns in the north east. It’s quite a change.

    @grivettcarnac I feel like people use the concept of “privilege” these days just to note that change is hard and to justify making no effort to change - and it is black and white thinking. Even moving a couple of your shops is still participating in the boycott - it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Sounds just like the argument against bike lanes acting as though that means 1000% of your errands and such need to be done by bikes.

    Correction: half a century of auto- and commuter-based city planning resulted in downtown cores like Ottawa being single-industry focused non-bourhoods where the sidewalks are rolled up on weekends and evenings (most businesses even ignoring even the possible patronage of neighbouring communities) had a devastating impact that was exacerbated by the pandemic.

    @johnefrancis I think when things are booming the business owners think it’s because they themselves are amazing and as long as they keep working hard things will continue to be amazing but when things are rough, it’s not their fault, it’s an outside party’s fault like the government or bike lanes because they are smart world saving small business owners.

    Wednesday: TB announces new RTO policy increasing on site presence.
    Thursday: Info comes out that the secretary of TB works remotely and regularly flies into Ottawa costing us tens of thousands of dollars.
    Friday: Secretary of TB resigns for "health reasons"
    That was quick.

    @ShaunOttawa yeah that sounds like the senior executive hypocrits. I worked for a DM who used the job to travel to and from his home in another city for free (he claimed he needed to travel for work and would get an airline pass through work and primarily use it to go home) and work there all summer. I’m sure he’s now an eager supporter of the clerk’s three day mandate.

    I just read something the Chancellor's official acct wrote on LinkedIn and noticed the image description.

    At the time I founded @ucaccessnow, not a single one of UC Davis' many social media accounts was using alt text/image description or captions on videos.

    I started documenting that and showing it on Twitter, mentioning their official acct in an attempt to embarrass them into action.

    They started adding them (not always, but started for the first time).

    They never credit

    casseagull,
    @casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

    @meganL and the moderate ones always take credit and use it to bludgeon the more vocal and disruptive activists to try to get them to stop and “be civil” when it was the vocal and disruptive ones that made the difference. It’s the pattern everywhere - though I do think every movement needs a moderate face to play the system but that moderate face needs to know and appreciate its role as a foil to the vocal/disruptive action.

    @grivettcarnac @dairpo @Auxonic the other part of the boycott is that it’s not don’t go there entirely, it’s only buy loss-leaders (stuff they underprice to bring people in to gouge then everywhere else) and mac and cheese may fit that bill.

    @ShaunOttawa deeply sus. I always expect them to announce some big change then so employees have to process it over the weekend on their personal time rather than at work where that should be done.

    One thing I kind of hate about travelling is riding functional transit systems, knowing that my own city hates me and people without cars so much we’ll never have this. In London, buses, the underground and overground, river ferries and bike share are all part of the system and all run regularly and on time and to convenient places. Imagine.

    casseagull,
    @casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

    @ShaunOttawa yeah it’s weird. This is apparently in scope and yet connecting bike lanes 100m away from a project is out of scope. Okayyyyyy

    We’re in London and my brain is so confused about travelling but being in a country where my first language is the common tongue here. I still feel a bit guilty and awkward b out of habit when speaking with people like I’m making them speak English and their native tongue is something else. Silly.

    @johnefrancis you’re not actually allowed to ride a scooter along any of them (they’re banned on NCC pathways) so a driver hitting you is most likely.

    casseagull,
    @casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

    @dan613 @mariellequinton you can, though part of the catch is that scooters are currently a pilot in Ontario as a whole (and banned in Toronto!) and the province may decide to ban them province-wide. https://www.ontario.ca/page/electric-kick-style-scooters-e-scooters

    Honestly, truth. Our realtor when we were buying suuuuuuucked and he got money for doing functionally nothing - we did our own research, did all the market trend analysis to put in our bid and he remembered nothing about our preferences. https://www.businessinsider.com/new-rule-of-home-buying-fire-your-real-estate-agent-2024-4

    It was also clear from the bidding part that our agent was probably colluding with the seller's agent, ensuring that the selling price was exactly - exactly - the maximum price we gave him.
