Actually worked on this crane in the beginning of my career. Wasn't under Mammoet then but ALE. I didn't find the mechanical design all that interesting since you don't see size on your computer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Oq3nWkTtY

@MisterMaker That is badass!! The biggest crane test load I ever designed was 438 tons.

I don't know why component manufacturers even bother publishing catalogs on their websites because they almost never have the parts in inventory.

"Oh, our hydraulic actuator meets all of the requirements of your project? You can have it in 15 months."

I feel like I could design my own and spin up a manufacturing line for it in less time.

chrishuck, (edited )
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@bmaxv Probably not. But, that’s not the point. I’m sure there are tons of manufacturers and distributors that complain about places like McMaster-Carr. The reason people buy from them is because they have inventory and you can easily see if it’s in stock. Sure, you might pay a little more, but they actually have it when you need it. Availability drives more of my buying decisions than cost.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@bmaxv My biggest gripe with modern business is nobody having anything in inventory. It’s all “Just in time” delivery. They all think every company is a John Deere or CAT that buys things by the thousands and plans a year’s worth of production. I’d wager more customers have the one-off demand. If a supplier tells me they don’t have what I need in stock, I generally move on right away.

An OctoPrint release overshadow by some major CI issues (outage, not my fault, but I managed to solve it with a workaround), PyPI changes refusing to accept my sdist name (was still accepted during RC phase, will have to push that manually) and still being exhausted from yesterday.

Timing 😅 But it's out 😊

It has been pointed out by friend-of-the-show @agiletortoise that these are, in fact, two different people.

I don't have a position except to say that many people find both Jameses somewhat challenging to listen to.

Merlin regrets the error.

@hotdogsladies @agiletortoise The whole time I kept thinking you were going to mention that it was actually Jerry Reed that you were talking about.

Continuing my of the logos of my favorite teams, the next installment is the Rubber Ducks minor league baseball team. When I bought the hat last year, I knew I needed to do something with the logo because it really pops.

I fired up to make a SVG and to make the model from that SVG. It took a little planning on the heights for the different colors since I only have one extruder. Turned out great!

@M4x Thank you! Yes, I had to manually change the filament each time. I would need a maxed-out PrusaXL to have enough extruders for automatic filament changes.

Due to travel and things I hadn’t done any #3dPrinting for two weeks.

Anyone want to guess what I’m doing today?

(Aside from printing too fast and under extruding in the corners 😉)

Why did I ever develop open source software that requires DNS, NAT, reverse proxy and HTTPS certs to work properly? Every request I get for setup help quickly devolves into me having to draw diagrams 😭

@thelinuxcast As a longtime user of Ubuntu, I really have no complaints. I can do CAD to code and everything in between. The people that I see complaining about Ubuntu are doing things with computers that most people are not. I can understand not using it if you’re a gamer or in some development environments. However, for the average user, it’s a good OS that runs well on old hardware.

I’m certainly not afraid to repair things in my house, but a fix that I thought would be “easy” on my dryer has turned into an entire drum replacement. There is a felt seal/bearing on each end of the drum. It’s glued onto the drum… The front seal split and got inside the drum, twisting itself around clothes that were in there. A new drum will be here in a week, but this seems like an unnecessarily-costly-to-repair design. It’s only 4 years old ffs.

I suppose that it’s at least fixable…🤷‍♂️

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj Nope. It’s a GE.

Manufacturer’s warranty is only a year. I had a previous GE that I bought used that was still going strong after 12 years of my use. I had to replace the control board on it once, but it was mechanically solid. It stayed at my old house. I bought a new set when I bought this house 4 years ago. I was a little shocked at this failure.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@kbob I can do either. There’s a drying rack beside the dryer that is generally where my cycling clothes go. We have another drying rack that has forced airflow that can work in a pinch. Fortunately, the laundromat isn’t far away. Less than a 5 minute drive.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj I will say that I already had to replace the door catch on this dryer. I’m just glad I can get parts and it’s serviceable, even if I t took a little bit to figure out how to get it apart.

Well...I'm kinda getting fed up with Fusion...today it won't save changes to a part, no matter what. I think the part is finished so it should not be a problem, but still...

So, I'm gonna try my hand at Freecad. As of first impression, I have no fucken idea on how to do anything. XD

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@Nixie @smellsofbikes If you’ve been using Fusion for 7 years, you should be pretty familiar with the Sketch->Feature workflow. In FreeCAD, you will probably want to start with the Part Design workbench. It will be the most like what you’re used to in Fusion. As others have said, the MangoJelly and Joko Engineering YouTube channels are great resources. There are tons of us here on Mastodon as well. Just use the #freecad tag for reach. We want to help!!

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@Nixie @smellsofbikes You can also check out Ondsel. It’s a fork of FreeCAD that might present a more approachable experience compared to what you’re used to. It’s still FreeCAD under the hood, but the interface addresses some new user complaints. The same tutorials and techniques apply.

FreeCAD is extremely powerful and works like most other CAD, as much as people want to say that it doesn’t. It’s been improved significantly in recent years and keeps getting better

My dad is a huge fan of YouTube. He listens to so much music on there even though I pay for Spotify for him. Today, he was telling me about something he saw in a video about repairing an overhead garage door and how it helped him fix his own door. While that's not surprising by itself, what caught me off guard was that he didn't refer to what he watched as a video, but as a "YouTube". He's like: "Just type in 'garage door bottom board repair' and you get 20 YouTubes about it." 😂
