A beautiful sunset in the neighborhood this evening after the storms passed.

As both a fan, and a fan, I was inspired by the print linked below to create my own sign to show my support for the Crew on my desk at my office at work.

https://www.printables.com/model/155492-cleveland-guardians-logo

So, I fired up to make the SVG, and then to create the 3d model that I then 3D printed. I printed the yellow part separate and glued it in.

So glad to have such great tools to make ideas reality. Can’t forget and .

@reprapryn I’m simply experimenting with creating toroidal helixes so that I can create 3d printed flower pots that look like woven baskets. My grandmother used to weave baskets and I have some flowers from her funeral that I’d like to repot into pots that look like baskets to remind me of her.

I’m glad that I have a good boss that has given me the week off after being out of town for 11 days to support a project at a chemical plant in Houston. This gives me time to catch up on all of the , , and bike maintenance that I couldn’t work on while I was there.

Also, this trip further reinforced why I’m very glad I live in .

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@kbob Yeah. It was the first real day of the job and we took a minute in the plant to look through the eclipse glasses I had with me. We could tell the light dimmed and you could see it, but it was definitely not totality. My partner said she had the perfect spot on our back patio.

I wish we could find a better solution than grub screws for attaching pulleys to shafts in 3D printing. Small-scale requirements make it difficult to use other industrial systems.

Grub screws often loosen under the effect of vibration even with Loctite. They also introduce eccentricity. And the tip of the grub screws marks the shaft, making it difficult to remove the pulley.

Any idea how we could improve this?

@3dprinting

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@bear_lab If you put a flat on the shaft for the set screw to push against, it won’t deform the round part of the shaft and it will provide a better transmission of torque that contacting the cylindrical surface. If you use the flat, use cup point or dog point screws instead of a cone point.

Ordered a massive pipe wrench to try and help remove a very seized seatpost (I don’t have a table vice), but then managed to get it unstuck before the wrench arrived so now I just like… have a pipe wrench that I’m almost certainly going to forget to return

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@lewis At least you didn’t have to cut off the seat post and saw a slot with a hacksaw to get it out because it was corroded to the frame… I had to do that several years ago and it wasn’t very fun.

The hurdles I'm jumping through to get Declan to be able to play on a Minecraft server that I'm hosting, using his Switch, are truly asinine.

This is user-hostile from top to bottom, inside and out.

And all this started because he put HOURS into building something locally on his switch that just ✨disappeared ✨.

I know tech documentation is often subpar, and I’ve worked on software documentation before but now that I’m wrenching on cars more I had no idea how bad their documentation is.

Terrible how-to videos, ugly xeroxed photos you can’t make out, multiple steps omitted, no labels on parts in boxes.

I think the problem is that engineers designing the product don’t think like a normal person that doesn’t work there so they write instructions for themselves, people who are mechanical engineers.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mathowie This is a chronic problem not only in the car industry. Some companies are good and have technical communication departments that specialize in creating documentation that works. Most companies just try to cut costs because they think engineers can also just make documents because they already have the 3D models and specs. While not all engineers are good at distilling things down, the real problem is the cheap accountants not budgeting for the documentation people.

I should clarify that I think that any advanced technology that looks like a shortcut, regardless of whether it’s finished or not, will be exploited by people that don’t understand it because they think it will make them money. When they do dumb or awful things with it, it makes the technology look bad regardless of whether it can be useful in the right hands. It’s why engineers don’t like “businesspeople”. They ruin everything.

It's extremely windy outside, and they're forecasting up to 100mph gusts across the whole metro area. After the Marshall Fire in 2021, where several fires, one possibly from a downed powerline, swept through the western suburbs of Denver, driven by 70mph winds, it appears that the power company may be cutting power to some of the area, including where I live. This'll be interesting. Right now it sounds like a jet aircraft is running at idle just over the hill.

Even if you’re not a software developer, this is an excellent example of how to gather and parse feedback. Admitting that there are things that can be improved is normal, but so is explaining why a specific request or complaint isn’t actionable. Listening to users of your stuff builds good will. As a user, offering specific feedback also builds good will. “It sucks.” is not actionable.

Great video, Martin!

@normand They’re actually 27”, but I’ll have to check the width when I get home. They’re at least 25mm wide. The handlebars are mustache bars made by Soma. This is totally my beater bike for errands and easy cruising. I really need to switch the drivetrain to modern indexed shifting instead of the friction shifters that are so frustrating.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@normand It’s actually 27.5”. A typo on my part. It’s a pretty solid bike. I had a steel Miyata before that was a fixed gear commuter bike. Those small steel tubes definitely flex more than my carbon cyclocross bikes!
