One of the more interesting things when I was working for the Election Commission was finding out that of 5 people at the polling booth I was working at, 4 of us had birthdays in October, and 3 of us had birthdays on the same day (different years). Wild.
Two voters with the same birth date turned up and I told them about the coincidence - they were chuffed.

Attended the rededication of the Sappers Memorial at St Davids, on Kyhber Pass Rd, Auckland, this morning. I went to remember the many gay men who died in both wars.

The Aussies had a teal election. In Wellington, I'd call it the Paul Eagle effect. Suffice it say, the urban centres of Te Ika a Maui have had a gutsful of Labour.

@ZippyGonzales As one wag on the bird site said, Labour failed to inspire its base.

Well, an interesting day. Did preliminary counts for an electorate - all the advanced votes. Distributed across 5 teams of 6 people at a table.
I was table leader so responsible for distributing votes to be counted, ensuring correctly counted, and recording the results, before sealing the votes into an official bag.
Hard to say what the mood was because it's lots of little booths with a few big ones e.g. biggest booth was 1700 votes, next biggest 700 votes. Great experience.

Also the votes counted were ordinary votes casted prior to 14th October. To be counted are special votes.

I never watch TV. Decided to tune in a bit to see how elections are covered in NZ (in past years I was always traveling or recovering from jet lag so didn’t pay much attention).

Just like the damn debates - fast paced, like calling a boxing match, pop over to the too loud commercials and back to the cage fight.

Is TV always like this or just the political coverage?

Sad news that New World Metro at the Wellington Railway Station is closing in March 2024. Lots of people use it: school kids in the morning, office workers getting their breakfast - and their lunches, and those, like me, who are occasionally asked to pick up some bread or tomatoes on the way home. Expensive compared to other supermarkets but was definitely filling a need.

christopherd,
@christopherd@mastodon.nz avatar

@paulhellyer @leighelse It is absolutely fantastic when I visit friends in Wgton and use the train to go to/from town. I stop to get some wine / cheese etc on my way back to my friends place. Shame that it is closing.

Well I voted yesterday and I went party vote green and labour candidate just couldn't justify the double red this election I just don't like the Labour party under Chippy waaaay to center right.

@CraigKendrickNZ Thank you for your effort! Appreciated!

If you know people aged 18 - 30, check in with them. Do they need transport to a polling booth? Do they know they can vote without an EasyVote card (though it helps!)? Do they need more information?

Thank you for your support of democracy!!

If you know three other people who are iffy about voting, have a korero with them. They may need information, or perhaps a ride to the polling booth.

So regarding the fucking over from the landlord. on top of the exhorbanent extra fees they hit me with from last month.

I have always been allowed to build a suhhak. This year they tore it down and slapped me with a $250.00 maintenance cleanup fee for something I am not approved to have because its a religious display.

at the same time they disposed of my mezuzah for the same reason and hit me with another %250 for damages to the property with a religious display.

I will bet everything I own that they will again put up Christmas shit again this year and allow the tenants to display Christmas shit again.

If it's true that NZ is one of the least corrupt countries in the world., I shudder to think how corrupt other countries must be...

So, I'm looking up how to vote again, lol.

I thought we got ballots in the mail, but maybe that was just that one time back during lockdown?

Also, I don't think we got any Easy Vote packs? Maybe they got blown out of our mailbox by the high winds this weekend, lol

@floradian I read a great book, quite a few years ago now, that examined the state of happiness (or proxies) in NZ in 1950s and in the early 2010s - these were the same, so analysed the C02 emissions of daily lives then compared to today's and theorised that living like 1950s would result fewer C02 and same amount of happiness. Great NZ book.
